Default Check Your Policy!

Hey Folks,

I talked to a friend of the owner of the boat that capsized out of Garibaldi the first day of the halibut season. First of all his boat was 60 miles off of Florence at last report, but more importantly he found his insurance policy only covered him for 0-12 miles out.

Another hard lesson learned yesterday about the south side of the Tillamook Bay bar entrance. Two folks lost their lives in a capsizing.

I understand that the guy who sunk his boat at the Chicken Ranch last year on the first day had the same problem.

My Allstate policy says Coastal out to 100 miles.

Not only that but check your navigational range up and down the coast. A lot of policys will not insure the Columbia River bar or near Cape Flattery. A good thing to add to your insurance policy is towing. It is reasonably cheap and would probably reimburse you if you get towed in by a friend or a commercial towing service. You can't always depend on the USCG to tow you in for free. If a commercial tower is nearby, he can legally can tell the Coast Guard to heave too.

Well, after three trips out for Halibut, I was just informed that my Hartford policy only covers me out to 20 miles at $483.00 per year. Any recommendations on other insurers?

Check out BOATUS (www.boatus.com) I just switched to them a month back. Insures you up to 100 miles off shore. I'm only paying $250/year.

I am not sure what size boat you are insuring, but I have a 19.5 foot boat, two motors and the trailer insured with American Family Insurance. My coverage is out to 100 NM and my policy is for "full replacement value" and in addition I carry high values for liability. My policy is $115 a year.

I'm with Mid-Century, an offshoot of some sort from Farmers. I found out I'm covered for the entire Western Hemisphere -- about $225 per year on a 23'.
