Default Late Wickiup-Odell Kokanee report

Made our annual trip to Odell this past Tuesday thru Friday with friends. Odell water temps were still verrrry cold. We averaged 40-41 degree surface temps and only had a couple of bumps on Tuesday morning. We trailered the boats and headed for Wickiup and had pretty good success. One of the boats in our group limited daily at Wickiup, but the others still had good numbers. I brought back about 90 kokanee from 4 days fishing, all from Wickiup. A few of them were slabs, ranging from 14-16 inches in length, but most were around 10-12 inches.

On Wednesday, one of the guys in our group caught two very nice Browns while jigging for Koke's in the mouth of the Davis Creek. Got them just a few minutes apart and they measured 24" & 26". Both put up a heck of a fight (but he had a great cheering section!) on ultra light gear and 4 lb test line.

The parking is very limited, as stated in other posts, at Wickiup as the Forest Service and Oregon Marine Board are working on both ramps at Gull Point. Supposedly there will be much more parking available at the eastern ramp, along with a dock when they are all done. The parking lot in the camp ground itself is also being expanded. Right now it is a mess.

We stayed at Odell at the Shelter Cove Resort and got reports on Thursday that Koke's were finally being caught in small numbers. Friday morning the fish were rising for the first time that we saw. I am sure it is probably very fishy now that there has been some warmer weather.

There is a tremendous amount of snow at Odell, with limited parking. Jim and Trula at the lodge are making the best of it and are very accommodating. Some of the cabins on the west end are just visible because of the piles of snow.

One of our group drove over to Cresent Lake and found the ramp open, but little or no parking available in the immediate area because of all the packed snow there.

Good food, poker & cribbage rounded out our stay. Sorry for the late post.

What do you say are your favorite jigs to use for Kokes; do you find different patterns for different waters or does it matter?

We don't fish kokanee too much but when we jig, we use buzz bombs 2-3" and have had some success. Most of the time, we troll.

That sounds like an excellent time. It sure looks like I should have fished Wickiup last weekend.

FRG,

You should have. You could have visited with your cousin Scoota too! We are friends from way back and I got invited to tag along with them on this trip about 15 years ago. I have missed a couple of years, but for the most part I have had a great time getting together once a year with this group.

As far as jig go, the chrome and orange small buzz bombs seem to be the ticket year after year. Works best when the fish are schooled up like they were last week.
