Default Rope start on 9.9 Mercury?

When pulling my rope start on my 9.9 Mercury it will sometimes hang up half way out and almost break my wrist. Today when trying to start it was doing the same thing but the motor would not start. After several pulls and it hanging up it finally started. The motor runs great. Is something wrong with my rope start?

Make sure it is positively in nutral. Sometimes Mine will do that and Ill have to switch it from neutral to foreward and then back to neutral. If the motor is in gear... or thinks it is in gear... It has a safety to keep you from starting it. The safety is the rope stops operating.

Mine too, on occasion. And I know what you mean about the wrist thing, and just make sure the wifes face isn't too close behind you when the T-handle slips out of your hand.

There is an adjustment on the top of the starter, if your's is doing it often is an easy fix.

My '03 has done that too, a few times. My fix is just to let the rope re-wind, slowly pull it out about half way, let it re-wind again, and then pull to start. I have no idea why that works, but it seems to.

If I had it to do over, I'd buy the same Merc 9.9, but WITH electric start and trim... Just my

I'll give that a try. I agree on the electric start and tilt. Thinking about the Prokicker with electric start and tilt.
