Default Newport Dockside Tackle

Anyone else notice that both the fuel dock and the charter shop had great prices on gear and a really good selection? I was impressed. Usually places right by the ramp gouge hard. I will patronize both these places heavily. Love to spends my tackle moneys with the local small businessmen as opposed to the corporate monsters.

I was in Newport herring fishing this weekend. I stopped at Harrys Bait and Tackle in Newport for herring jigs knowing he would have them. I did not want to risk getting to the dock knowing it was going to be crowded and find out they did not have any, or wanted 5 times what they are worth.

I checked the price of the herring jigs at the dock just to see if they had them after I already got them at Harrys. They were asking $1.69 rather than Harrys $1.60 per package, for 9 cents per package more I would have been happy to get them dockside. I dont call that gouging at all.

I sure wish the Port of Garibaldi would drive to Newport and get a lesson on dock layout, ramp design, fish cleaning station design, parking requirements, services etc....... I was really impressed to see the guy with his vacumn packer at Newport charging $1 for small bag, $1.50 for large bag and vacumn packing fish for people right as they cleaned them.

Newport charges $6 per launch where Garibaldi charges $3, but the services are 10 times better in Newport and worth every penny of it in my opinion.

I concur 100%. We paid 31 bucks for a slip for two nights, and ~70 to camp for three nights. Well worth it. Awesome facilities. How old is that whole south beach marina? It's got to be one of the best run facilities on the west coast.

BOE, yep that Newport S. Beach is the standard by which all facilities should be judged. I especially like the rinse out station and adjacent dumpster (free Crabbait! for dumpster divers). I can almost get all of the heavy boat cleanup done just a few minutes out of the water. It just hoses off. The dried on gunk you get after the 4 hour drive has to be scrubbed off. Meanwhile the crew is over at the fish station cleaning the catch.

Teamwork!

BTW there is another fish cleaning station up by the pier. I use it when the ramp station is jammed up.
