Ford Ranger
Does anyone have some input on these trucks, I've been seeing ads in the paper for 2008 Ford Rangers x-cab, loaded 4x4 for like $15,500 don't know what motor, V6 maybe? seems like a good price, how do they do for fuel mpg. They are offering 0% for 72 months you can't beat that. any input will help. Thanks

Re: Ford Ranger
I have a 99 ford ranger extra cab four wheel drive automatic that gets about 18 mpg. It gets about half of that when I drive around in the mountains.

Re: Ford Ranger
I have an 02 4 wheel drive automatic. It gets around 18 mpg. I bought in 04 with 20,000 miles on it. So far it's been a a good little truck, it pulls my boat ok even up the coast range. It has 116,000 miles now, I just hope it will last a few more years.

Make sure you read the fine print. Once you get in the door, things can change in a hurry. If they give you a low/no interest rate for financing you won't get squat for a trade in. They WILL make it up somewhere. $15,500 sounds a bit low, in fact way too low for the options you mentioned.
Those Ads are usually a loss leader and/or a bait and switch. I've been through that routine a few times. One or two vehicles at a dealership will be featured at a ridiculous price, get sold in one day but the ad is still in circulation for a week and folks will come in.
But that's just advertising, smart advertising. Heck, it worked on me a few times.
If you buy a brand new 2008 X-cab(four door) "LOADED" 4x4 for a net cost of $15,500 I will be very, very suprised.
It IS possible, just not probable. Those Ad trucks get snapped up right away. Get the morning paper on the day(or day before) a new ad breaks and be at the dealership before they open.
I hope you CAN do it though!
Anyways, I'm on my third Ranger in 16 years, NO complaints. My first two were the 2.3L engines, a 2WD and then a 4WD respectively. Although I took good care of them I put them through their paces with campers/driftboats and off-roading. Never had either truck in the shop except for maintainance. Both were in the mid 100K mileage range when I sold em'(I like getting new rigs ).
I bought a brand new 2004 Ranger "Edge" X-cab 4x4 that year. It has the 4.0L V-6 engine, manual tranny(I hate autos) I get 21MPG on the freeway, noticibly less in town or off-road though. At the time I bought it I was told my truck is basically a pick-up body stuck on an Explorer frame/chassis. I have about 43K miles on this rig now, no problems to report.
I like the power this 4.0L has, it tows well and I can pass if I need to. The highway mileage trade-off against the 2.3L is about 3 mpg tops.
However, my previous two Rangers(on the actual Ranger frame) could take corners as well as most cars, the front ends on those made #1 on Consumer Reports several times.
I don't feel near as comfy on tight corners with my 2004 Edge though, it's a bit squirrely.
But I DO like this rig. I don't think you will go wrong with a Ranger, no matter the model. I have a friend who works at a big dealership in Corvallis. He tells me it's very very rare to see a Ranger in the shop for anything besides maintainence etc.
Although I haven't bought a rig from Dave(Mr. Kitchen Pass, ifish sponsor) it sounds like he is a no BS kind of guy, quite a few folks here have bought from him.

Good luck!

Re: Ford Ranger
i think the 08 can come with a 2.8l, or a 4.0..... go with the 4.0 and you will not be sorry, in my jeep my 4.ol pulls a 17.5 foot Alumaweld like it wasnt there.... plus they are almost industructible and you can mod them for more power.....

And sometimes they can work in your favor if a dealership is looking to move rigs. I bought my F-350 this way. I wanted a truck they had, but it wasn't one of their lost leaders. They were advertising 10K off on those. I simply said if they would sell me a particular truck at 10K off I would be in tomorrow and buy it. Called me back in 10 minutes and the deal was done. 4 years ago, that was kind of unheard of.

How can you mod them? I'd like to remove the speed governor from mine, if possible.

Re: Ford Ranger
I have an 04 2WD 2.3L ford ranger, has 150somethin HP (the 03s and older had less HP)
76K, owned since new...Been a good truck.
Gets great gas mileage.
If I keep it at 65MPH goin down the free way I can get 28-30 depending on wind, draft, and grade of road.
Back roads and freeway avg is 27.5mpg
Towing my small 14ft smokercraft up North 2 years ago I got 26mpg down the free way.
My buddy has the 04 4.0 4WD, been a good rig. He figured 20mpg. He likes it. Has 80K..He got his used with 20K for 14K, loaded.

Re: Ford Ranger
I've had pretty good luck with my 2002. I bought it new as a loss leader for $13,500 with everything available. It's an auto 4.0L V6. I've got almost 80,000 miles on it and nothing major has gone wrong. I get about 17-19 miles a gallon with a canopy. Before the canopy, it did better on mileage.
I don't pull a boat, but pull a decent trailer to the dump every now and then without a problem. Although you can definitely tell something is back there.

Re: Ford Ranger
It was explained to me (after I complained a lot) that they can advertise the dealer demo models with less than 10,000 miles as "new" as they've never been retitled.
That being said, I bought a Ranger "loss leader" one time, no trade, paid cash (those were the days) and got exactly what was advertised on a vehicle with less than 50 miles. I especially liked that it had no carpet, which saved me money and made for easy cleanup.

Re: Ford Ranger
I drive an 03' 4 wheel drive ranger and I absolutely love it. Has quite a bit of power for a smaller truck.

Re: Ford Ranger
A guy can get a great deal on a car/truck if you shop the add cars and dont need to do a trade in. They will try to make up the difference on your trade. Just grab a Saturday Oregonian and scan the adds..

Re: Ford Ranger
The prices in the ads of almost every Portland dealer are actually below their cost, they rely on an aggressive and well trained sales force to make enough of a profit in a half a dozen other areas of the transaction to offset the loss. If you walk in and pay cash with no trade and don't buy a warranty etc., they can lose over $1,000, but trust me, most of the time they come out in the black. Save yourself some time and frustration and deal with someone like Mr Kitch'n Pass and eliminate the smoke and mirrors.
