Default California Salt

So this summer I have an internship down at AMES Research Center in California. While this is great for me cause I get to work for NASA, I am bummed cause the best days of TUNA! fishing will probably be going down while I am almost 10 hours from Newport.

So I was wondering if any dogs have an experience with fishing (charters or personal) down there. I'm gonna basically be in San Jose, so the coast is near. I know that they do TUNA! fish down there, but don't know about it. I also understand that their salmon season is in the same shape ours is, so who knows.

I was also hoping to kill some weekends in Monterey diving, but also know little about that area. Any dog divers got some places to recommend down that way?

You could take a look at the Stripers owners club. Loys of those guys down that way may have a open seat or two!

Threesmuch might be able to give you who and where to go down there. Also Onokai might be able to point you in a direction or get you signed up on their local forum down there.

You might also look into the Striper fishing if TUNA! isn't an option.

You can check out this site: http://www.coastsidefishingclub.com/
it should have some good info for you.

There is also a good site for the Monterey area but can't think of the name right now. I'll look around for it. There is no salmon fishing. It's closed for the year as far as I know. Tuna has been hit or miss the last few years. Weather has played a huge roll in boats being able to get out. You guys in OR. have lucked out in that regards.

If you are in S.J. the closest harbor will probably be Half Moon Bay or Santa Cruz. Monterey is a bit further south but not much. Just depends on where the fish are relative to your launch point. With it being a La Nina year the albacore fishing should be good. At least that's what a buddy of mine who commercial fishes told me. We'll see.

Check around SF there are charter boats that run combo trips for Stripers & CA halibut it isn't tuna but it might be worth the time.

Slobes,
Check the offshoreanglers.c-- site for bay area tuna stuff as this is the best site for that local action -Santa Cruz and Montery have some good charters-I can hook you up with a local guy who has a 6 pack operation out of Half moon bay and santa Cruz
As far as Diving your looking at some of the best west coast has to offer-I shoot photos so other than taking halibut there I leave the other fish to shoot with my lens. The best diving is from a boat or kayak-you can hit the jetty but its a reserve are if I recall-There is some good breach dives just ask about them at the local shops or join a forum like this one
http://www.bayareadivers.net/ hope this link is ok-just trying to share info Forgot about the rules on this??
I have dove Carmel bay alot as well as monterey bay-Carmel Bay is a boat only place-the charters run there. Its where I go when I tow my small boat south to dive. Hope this helps.Mark
