I concur. I have a friend that works in a bait shop down in SF Bay area and they were getting a shipment from a local vendor, whom I shall not name for fear of excommunication. They sold them 5 cases of herring, when they will only sell 2 to each customer who stops in.

I think the 2 per customer routine is so you come in every time you fish. Mebby buy a little something while you are here?

The Garibaldi 76 station had some nice looking black and purple label (for halibut) and green and blue for like 3.99. I always try to support dockside vendors when I can, so they will be there next time I forget the bait.

OK, this is the story I heard about the herring. All of the big bait boys were putting up the herring for the Japanese market, because of the herring roe. They were getting top dollar, and the fishing value of the same herring was like 1/3rd (I’m guessing). Anyway, it was a simple matter of economics, making a better living selling herring roe vs flats of herring for fishermen. I suspect it is something like that. The time is right, jig your own.

Default Herring at Newport

Fresh bait anyone? I have heard several reports from reliable sources that herring can be had under the Yaquina bay bridge. Fish were caught on Sunday and they are bright and firm, not spawners.

I don't know about you but I am pretty cheesed at the baitfish situation. Go get your own bait and watch the 5 or 6 buck prices get back to what we are used to.

On the Halibut grounds fresh herring is what's for dinner.

No one has explained to any degree of satisfaction why herring is scarce. I believe it is a conspiracy to raise the price. Hey Mulder, check it out.
