Halibut gear check list
The time to go and kill the FB's is quickly comming upon us. Puffin has been gathering gear for about 6 weeks now, and I think it would be good to go over a check list:
1) A deep water safety tested boat and skipper: both in good working order
1a) ICE! plenty enough to cover your boats limit of fish
1b) Gas money
2) At least one extra complete rig able to fish deep water. One for each of your crew, and at least one complete setup for the boat
3) Plenty of good bait: herring, squid, octipus, some big jigs
4) Plenty of large sinkers and big hooks and swivles
5) Food and drink: enough to feed your crew plus a little extra. bread, meat, cheese, crackers, water, soda
6) Good working electronics
7) Rain gear, gloves, hat, shades
8) Cigars (Cuban if you can gett'm  )
9) Good weather, and a friendly Ocean
10) Crab gear and bait
11) Camera with film
I am getting so jacked about visiting the FB grounds, and I hope that everyone who gos out on Big Blue is ready and has a safe trip.
Any other things that you can think of that are
good to take, lets hear about them!
Tom

Re: Halibut gear check list
I think you got most of it covered. Since i have the captain part set up, I will post one more:
12. Good, safety concious, sober crew that understands the costs associated with offshore fishing, and helps with everything without being asked (or ordered).
And another
13. A digital camera for bragging online about your catch! Everybody better hold up fish when threemuch swings by if you want your pics posted!

Re: Halibut gear check list
Hey Kurt,
Good post, esp about being good crew. Jon (puffin) and I have put together these trips out to where the FBs live for the past couple of years
and the expense of being able to have everyone on board fish is quite a chunk of coinage.
I am going out with another buddy the 10th and 11th on his wifes (haha) 24ft bayliner called the Wally Gator.
Look foward to seeing you out there
(ps) puking is OK, as long as you hit the rail first!!

Re: Halibut gear check list
Anyone who wants to work on their turtle calling, that's fine. Outside. No buckets in the cabin, buckets can and usuall do spill.
I actually like the chum in the water. it calls the fisheys in very well.

Re: Halibut gear check list
Ok Tom,
What about ...
14)Pen .. you know you're gonna need it for the tag
15)Harpoon .. oh yeah .. you know you'll need this too.
16)Gaff .. nets are for gapers
17)VHF tuned to 77, so you can hear 'Puffin' say 'dead fish!'.
18) Salmon gear for the rockpile. 4 boats Sunday with limits of kings.
uh ,, uh
19) Mr. Fisherman's breakfast burritos, heated through on the intake manifold during the 30 mile dash to the halibut drive thru. Just like camping, food tastes pretty good 30 miles offshore.
20) A float plan and someone to call in if you don't make it back.

Re: Halibut gear check list
Ray,
I will ask Jon what the crew plans are for Saturday. I gave up my seat on the Puffin to go out with my good friend Jerry.
It does not look good, as Jon allways seems to have too many people lined up to fish. But it just might work for you.
I'll talk to him on Tuesday, and leave a post after.
After all, he just lives two houses up the road.
Tom

Re: Halibut gear check list
Good input, John
Esp the extra gear for 'nookys on the rockpile.
Any word on a possible "DERBY"? Jon mentioned it this weekend, and my buddys boat and crew are in.
Are you ready to fly your fish killing flag??
