Default AR scope

From what I've gathered you can basically put any scope on an AR. I have a Aimpoint knockoff but I really want a recticle scope. My question is: Due to the range and minimal drop of a .223 round wouldn't it be better to get something that has a greater magnification than 9x? I could just get a 3-9x leopold but I'd like something that I could really reach out and touch something with...any suggestions, thoughts, or helpful input??

Might take a look at the new generation Burris tac-30 or the Euro-30 3.5-10X50mm Illuminated ballistic--plex or a non Illum. 4-14X42 Tac-30

What are you planning on shooting at? I have a 1 1/4 x 4 scope on one AR and a 6 x 24 on another. Both serve their purpose.

I have leopold VX II 4-12 on mine but a 3-9 would work great it all depends on what you want to do with it.

And I would also like some input on scope mount options. I know the the leupold 4x12 has a pretty long eye relief. How do you get the scope far enough forward and support it?

the only problem I see is holding the rifle steady at 6x plus power for close in shooting. Unless the rifle was just for bench use?

Depending on the scopes eye relief a cantilevered mount like a LaRue is a good, albeit pricey option. For most traditional crosshair scopes rings alone on a flat top receiver will not give sufficient eye relief.

I have a carry handle; it's an old SP1. I'd really like to use it for a long distance coyote gun here in E. Washington.

I put a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40 with a LaRue mount on my AR and really like that set-up. My son put a 6-18x40 on his and it's a bit too much power on 6.

Yes, for shooting sage rats I would like a little more power on those 400 yard shoots than my current 3X9.

Hawk,

I was wondering what model you are using and its weight. What is the barrel profile. The 4.5-14 seems like a good optics choice. Do you have a iron site mounted in front of the scope or was the larue mount jsut to provide the best eye relief?

Thanks

If you had a flat top I would have recomended a Burris power of your choice with ballistiplex. The balistiplex matches the ballistics of the 223 almost perfectly. With a handle I have no idea how you would mount a scope. Perhaps a red dot with a multiplier mounted forward?

I don't really have a model per se. We kind of picked and chose our parts to assemble what we wanted. I have a Bushmaster lower, and a flat top Bushmaster upper, with a 20" Bushy barrel. I didn't like the aesthetics of the normal front sight base, so I had them ship the FBS separate from the barrel. I installed a four rail gas block that I've put a sling adapter on, and that works pretty sweet. I've got a standard handguard, but put a single rail along the bottom of the handguard, and that is where I put the LaRue quick disconnect bipod adapter. I've got the six position collapsible stock so the gun fits well when I've got alot of clothes on in cold weather, or shooting in shirt-sleeves in the summer. I bought a carry handle for it, then remembered I don't have the FSB! Duh.

I tried the Warne mounts (their factory is in Tualatin), but couldn't get the eye relief right with the Buckmasters scope, so I returned them and got the LaRue SPR-1.5 scope mount. The LaRue stuff is spendy, but it was the only thing I could find that fit what I needed it to do.

Oh, I picked up a rate and recoil reducing buffer and goodness does that make a HUGE difference in recoil. The .223 doesn't have much recoil to begin with, but the RR Buffer cuts it even more. The target definitely doesn't leave the scopes field of view, so you pick the target up much more quickly. Definitely worth the bucks.

As for weight, the gun is overweight...just like me! The scales say it weighs 10 pounds, scope and all.

Hey Hawk did you go with the Enidine hydraulic buffer?
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3Den%26sa%3DN
I’ve been playing around with one and really like it. My son & I would shoot one of our 16” AR’s with the Enidine in it and then with the standard buffer…the Enidine makes follow up shows noticeably quicker. I actually bought it to help see bullet impact on my 20” rat getter. Off a shooting table I can see my hits with the scope cranked up to around 18X with the Enidine in.

I went with one made by MGI Military. I looked at the Enidine and talked to some folks and ended up with the MGI. It's a mechanical buffer as opposed to Enidine's hydraulic; from what I had read I was just leary of the possiblity of the hydraulic part failing. It's probably a minimal chance of that happening, but I like the MGI. They probably have about the same effect I would guess.
