Outboards have only been available the last 50 years. Rowing through the surf used to be the way to go.......!

The first practical outboard motor was created by Norwegian-American inventor Ole Evinrude in 1909.

That painting is called "Storm Warning" by Winslow Homer....He used dorys as his subject a lot. With my dad starting out on a rowed dory. We kind of had a soft spot for his work in our beach house.

The halibut schooner is in the background, this is a semi-famous print. They launced the dory from the schooner - not in the surf

Then, as now, a sweeping sheer line and wide flaring sides made a seaworthy boat.

There was a National Geographic special called "The Loney Dorymen" that aired when I was about 6, ( same year JKF was assinated). It was set in Portugal and it was the schooner style of dory as in the painting. One thing I will remember until I die was in storms, they had to chain the dorys on the deck so the fishermen wouldn't abandon the schooner. They felt safer in their dory than on the big schooner.

I got ahold of one of Homers prints about 25 years ago and was told it was printed by the Art Intitute of Chicago in the early 40's

Called the Intitute and they said they did not have records from that time
It is how ever labled as being from there

The one I have is called "The Herring Net" that he painted in 1885

I also have one by Van Gogh titled "Fishing in Spring"

Along with these I have 2 others that are not fishing related

I wonder if they are worth anything
