Default 30-40 Ammo?

I'm looking for some ammo for a Model 1895 .30-40 Winchester. Having trouble locating it. Does anybody know where I can get some and about how much it will cost?

The 1895 Winchester you are speaking of would be chambered for 30-40 Kreg. Should still be able to find it.

I know it's out there, I've shot it before. I'm looking for somewhere in the Beaverton area that carries it.

I don't know about the Beaverton area, but the big warehouse store over here had it last time I looked. It's been a while since I looked though since I started rolling my own...

You're best bet for 30-40 Krag is probably gun shows. I have the same issue with 25-35 win. I reload but even finding brass is a challenge.

You can special order it through Joes. I think the boxes are $25 dollars. My dad ordered 400 rounds 30.40 Krag for his 1895. I could not belive he ordered that many. I told him to see if he could stop the order or change it out for something else before he picked it up at the store. He didn't do it. Now he has 400 rounds for an antique rifle in excellent condition that is worth some money. I wouldn't shoot it. We did shoot a box through it and is right on center at a hundred yards open sights. For me anyways.

My dad's 1895 was manufactured in 1897, do you know when yours was manufactured?

come to Aloha Surplus and talk to Dane. He should most likely have some. Maybe give him a call first. He has quite a few 30-40 krags

The gun is my Dad's, and it was manufactured in the early 1900's, dont know an exact date i think somewhere in the 1910's. His isn't exactly stock, the but has been modified which causes it to not be mint anymore. Also it has a peep sight instead of the leaf sights. your dad wouldn't happen to want to get rid of a few rounds sometime in the near future would he?

Geez, for the cost of ammo these days, plus the difficulty in obtaining it (I guess?), it would almost seem worthwhile to pick up a cheap reloading set (a bunch of LEE stuff comes to mind if doing it on the "cheaps") and start reloading your empties.

I know you can get .30-40 brass pretty easily...I picked some up to reform into .40-50 Sharps, a long obsolete cartridge.

I've never reloaded before, but your right, it would be worth it. I've been thinking about taking it up. Probably be a good side hobby. Not to mention I might be able to get a little bit better bang out of my .270

Once you get into reloading, you'll probably reload most of your centerfire ammo until you quit shooting.

Come to think of it, I've never shot a big game animal with a factory cartridge.

I do have a few boxes of factory .30-30, but haven't ever had the oportunity to use that rifle on any game.

By reloading you can address a number of issues from several perspectives. You may be able to reload cheaper (if you'd normally shoot a lot), you can create loads using components you'd never find in factory ammo, and you may be able to improve accuracy and sometimes performance as well.
