ocean report
Ok, lets have it. For those lucky ones that got to go out to big blue today how was it? The parents went down to garibaldi today and said it was beautiful, hopefully the ocean was the same way. thanks.

Re: ocean report
Hi Jim, the report is the ocean is still salty.
Just now back from an awesome day offshore from Newport. 'Puffin', 'Pilar and 'Kenai' went out to the rockpile and did a little fishing. Lings are plentiful and many undersize means this fishery has a bright future. I was reduced to just driving the boat as Pete did most of the catching. He bagged a legal 26" Lingcod and then a while later a much larger 10 to 12 lb beauty! 'This fish is fighting different than the others' said Pete. We got lings doing the drift mooch for salmon at the north end of the Rockpile.
After limits of toothy fish for all boats we went after the shiny fish. 'Puffin' bagged a shiny chinook dragging a herring at 100' on a downrigger in 180' of water, his first Ocean king. We tried and tried, got hit and farmed a few nice takedowns but no kings for 'Pilar'.
After the bait supply (note to self, bring twice as much bait as needed) got real low we decided to run in and check out the close in reefs for bottom fish and the kings in shallow waters.
'Puffin' got a few more rockfish and 'Pilar' got into a few more undersize lings. About 3 or so the wind got up a bit and we beat our way back to the north jetty to pull crab gear. Many females in loaded pots and a total of 7 nice hard barnacle bill crab for the bag. 'Puffin' only got 3 but the shiny fish made it all ok. Many, many female crabs everywhere we asked.
The weather was outstanding and the sea state was fair. A little bumpy (3 and 6) and a slow 17 mph ride on the way out to the pile early but it got downright warm and no wind by 10 or so. The ride back in was downwind and pretty fast. (2 and 5)
The last leg straight into the wind was the worst part of it when we came back from Seal Rock. (3 and 6 with a steady 20mph NNW wind and scattered whitecaps)
Pictures were taken and we'll post them as soon as they get done up.
Hey Kenai, tell us about your day, did you get any pictures?
The ocean was a perfect blue I am only used to seeing much further out instead of the usual muddy green.
Many thanks to Puffin, Kenai, Iamforelk, Pete, Serious fun, Wakm & Stakm and all of the Ifishers that visited with us today, on the water, at the dock and at Otis Cafe. If I forgot to mention you it is because I am very tired after a 20 hour fishing adventure. Good to see all of the smiling faces and bent poles.
Whew, now to sleep, perchance to dream......

Re: ocean report
I know of at least one picture ... the fish pictures from my camera are forthcoming. The film has to be reduced to digits - mid week maybe.
It's always a pleasure to crew for a captain who lines me up just right to do the catching.

Re: ocean report
Great day on the big pond. Couple of big Lings, and a load of bottom fish. Tried downrigger trolling for some Salmonoids with no luck in our boat. Sure beats slogging thru the mud and sticks on the river. Thanks to Pilar for showing us around the rockpile. If my camera worked better than my radio I'll post some pics. Outstanding day!

Re: ocean report
A late launch on Saturday left us without boats to follow to the rockpile. We failed to raise anybody on the radio so we puttered down to Seal Rock and jigged a bit. We got a few bass and one keeper lings. Like everyone else is reporting, we found lots of undersized lings.
Sunday, we returned to Seal Rock and found more bass and one nice 10 pound ling. We also spotted two whales.
Back at the dock, we witnessed four huge lings and a very big octupus. The boys who had them claimed the lings were 40 pounders but I would guess they were 25. They were big. The name of the hole they got them out of was "Zipperlip." I don't blame them.
Visited Englund Marine on Saturday and loaded up on 16/0 circle hooks, spreaders, a gaff and a harpoon. Lookout May 11!

Re: ocean report
One small ling (released)and 7 nice rockfish on the pinnacle just north of Seal Rock on Sunday (fishing alone). Could have easily limited on rockfish, but my stomach didn't like the ocean motion and I called it a day. That's a nice spot, shallow enough to cast light jigs and plastic for rockfish on light gear - they put up a respectable tussle.

Re: ocean report
Pirk Fan,
What boat were you in on Sunday?
I was in a red Alumaweld with red top. You probably saw us out there.

Re: ocean report
Fished 3 Arches Saturday with my son, had a great day. Many lings caught and found a cabazon concentration to pick on. The boy fished with bait most of the day, herring and an old freezer burned package of smelt (the smelt worked better than the herring by the way). 8" rubber worms in motor oil and white with a 4 oz. jig head produced very well. A lot of the lings were undersize, but about a dozen were in the keeper range. Kept a 12 pound and an 8 pound for table fare and let the rest grow for next time. Ocean was relatively nice, about 5 foot swells as predicted, able to run down and back at around 20mph with out beating myself up. Got off at about 1PM as the wind started out of the northwest with more than enough fish to clean. The drift was interesting early in the morning to the west-northwest. This took us from shallow to deep and taught me a lot about the preferred depth of the different species. All-in-all, a great day on big blue!

Re: ocean report
Long story short, got up at 3 and drove to Garibaldi, launched at 5 crossed the bar at first light. Easy crossing. Trolled about two hours for salmon off Three Arches in 180-200' of water. Blanked. Scored 16 blacks, a kelp greenling, a Cabezon and two lings (thanks Dino!)
The Adrianna found the Ling honey hole, out in 180' We were fishing herring, and caught about 15 lings, but most of ours were small. Adrianna caught a few very nice fish, from our boat they looked to be a pair 12-15 pounders. I got a good pic I will post tomorrow. We wound up with a couple 27" fish.
Crabbing was slow due to the big tide, but we got 7 hardshells. When we got back to the dock, Del Hane's Mintbrite was there and broken, and their crab gear was still out. I ran em back out to get it, and they scored six more (they had 10 from a previous pull), four of which they donated to us! Plus gas money. Thanks Del, always happy to help, even if I seemed crabby (it was a long day) and your generosity was not required, but much appreciated.
Had some radio trouble, switching to 16 when I keyed the mic, but only occasionally. Anyone know anything about this? I guess it's an excuse to go out and get DSC.

Re: ocean report
Much the same report as the rest of you. Fished the Yaquina Head Lighthouse Sunday, scored easy limits of bass and numerous undersize lings...did manage two keepers. We threw the crab gear out north of the jetty -- a lot of females, seven male keepers.
Does anyone know how the 24-26' Glasply ended up sitting high and dry on the boat ramp at South Beach? Geez, I felt sorry for those guys. It looked like their outdrive was up, so maybe they didn't suffer a ton of damage there.

Re: ocean report
I heard the owner of the GlasPly detected the leak and tied up to the dock and left word he was headed for a trailer. Apparently hours later, the marina folks drug it to the ramp before it went down. When I was there, they were wondering if the owner was ever going to return.

Re: ocean report
Moby,
I was in the Willies Asaltor with the gray top and Yamaha outboard. I'm pretty sure I saw you heading out about the same time I did. I love those shallow reefs down there, just don't love the ocean when the wave frequency is less than 10 seconds.
