Default Pewney swells by the weekend???

NOAA is now forcasting swells down to 6ft by Friday, 4ft by Saturday. It's still to early to book a room anywhere, and who knows what the wind will be like, but ALL BIG BLUE FLOATILLA SKIPPERS TO STANDBY MODE! A multi species target day, starting at the Rock Pile, may be in short term futures

OK guys, the swell prediction still has not changed....the ocean looks like the place we want to be this weekend, and local waters are super high.

Kurt has suggested Geribaldi; the far end of the three arch rocks reef and twin rocks for salmon, shallower for bottom fish, and of course crab. I think that is the ticket and where I'm going to come Friday night, provided of course the swell prediction doesn't change a great deal.

Who's up for a Geribaldi Floatilla come Saturday morning?

Garibaldi is good early in the year for bottom fish and for a marginal weather day. But the bar is tide sensitive and it will be going out all day till early afternoon. => rough or closed bar. Oh and there are crabs along the beach off the S. Jetty.

Newport or bust. See also 'Rockpile Chinook'. 'Puffin' and I have some #'s to check out before the May days get here. Proven fishery and alot more water to plunder. Oh yeah and the bar is easy on almost any tide.

Besides I can't let Moby bag all the Seal Rock Chinooks. That's something I definitely want to learn all about.

Hey Kurt, get in Jon's boat and go with us.

I am going to do Garabaldi or nothing this weekend. I can't burn both days, I will be burning enough wifely good will with the upcoming Halibut days.

I have shakedown work to do on the boat too, so I will do that if I can't fish. Gotta get my new fuel tanks and filter in and functioning. I am going to check out the tides, etc. Maybe work on the boat for a few hours, then head out after the tide turns for a few hours.

Da Svedanya, comrade. Hey man throw out some crab gear on the S. Jetty beach.

 My cut is 25%, Yes?

What did you do with the waterlogged gas you had going?

I would be willing, but you know it means crossing the Bar at daybreak and probably staying out until mid afternoon. I don't know if my crew would be willing to get up that early and stay out that there so long.( I AM!) There is a minus low at 1:38 p.m.? If I can get out I'd sure like to try the salmon trolling around the Twin Rocks area, of course thats after picking up a limit of bottom fish at Cape Arch.

Pilar,

You have a good point about the Tilamook Bar. I'm going to wait for the been there/done that Friday report from Geribaldi. May show up in Newport instead.

South beach marina it is, I see high tide at the Yaquina bar at 5:40 AM. What will be the departure time. I'd love to follow you guys out if you want the company. I'll be in the Arima with the Ifish/Grateful dead sticker on the back.

Ze waterlogged gas, yes. Repaced Fuel filter/water separator. New Spark plugs. Water absorber in main fuel, and fuel stabilizer in correct proportion. Ran great two weeks ago when made the mods.

As a backup, two 12 gallon tanks, one ready to go for this weekend, to give me independent backups which will get me back from the chicken ranch if I have problems in the future.

Folks,

just returned from South Beach for a hopeful trip out to Seal Rock for bottom fish. I did not launch -- 15-20 out of the NW at 7 a.m. and a few whitecaps. The bar was good, but the wind was sure to make bottom fishing less than enjoyable. The swell is not a problem, but the wind chop was an issue. Small Craft Advisory has been issued from Cascade Head south for today.

Pilar,

I have a 21' Thunderjet do you think I would have any problems making it to the Rock Pile? I have made many trips out of of Garibaldi and Astoria.
Did make one trip 25 miles out of Ucluet this summer but the ocean was like a lake.

I know I can fish the bubble at Garibaldi but would like to learn a new place.
Thanks for any info.

Final Float Plan:

My group is meeting in Newport at 10:00 tonight. We will launch and moor for a hassle free departure in the morning.

Crab pots are a 50/50 probability. Most of us are experiencing crab overload and want to get straight to the fishing.

Our captain has never been to the rockpile before. His wife, Stoyjun Princess, has. I have not but I have the GPS coordinates. The boat is ready. Herring is on board.

We are anticipating a 7:00 am departure. We will have the radio on the Salty Dog VHF channel and will be looking for ifish stickers going west.

Kenai, I'll be looking for your Grateful Dead sticker. Tuck in behind us, if you want. Thunderstruck, you'll be welcome to follow our inexperienced crew out to the site. Hopefully, we'll all be following a blue tri-hull with a white top out for a massive slaughter.

Our boat (the Barhopper) is a red Alumaweld Intruder with a red top.

Let's have some fun and stay safe!

Thunderstruck, I tried once to hit the pile in my old 22' thunderjet. Got three miles out in two to three foot wind waves and turned around. Too much pounding for my liking for a 16 mile run. As far as fishing out of, the 12 degree hull was very stable and safe feeling. Getting there and back was the only problem... Joe

Float plan for 'Pilar' ...

0300 road trip to the coast.
0600 S. Beach boat ramp at Newport
0630 outward bound to drop crab gear and head out to fish.
A - Rockpile if weather permits
B - Close to the beach for bottom fish. Or seal rock for a fishing lesson from Moby.

What is the official VHF, 77?

1200 or later if no wind, return to boil crab and clean fish.

Float plan 'Puffin'

2100 - Road trip to Newport
2400 - S. Beach boat ramp to launch and moor.

0630 - hook up with group and head west

'Puffin' is a 21' Ed Wing aluminum with a stand up white top and a Honda 130. Stop in and visit with Jon, he's a nice guy.

See ya there!
