Molding Your Own Jigs
I need another hobby to keep me away from the honey do list! I was thinking about making my own bottom fishing jigs.
Can some of you experts out there tell me the best (cheapest) place to get molds, the soft plastic and dyes for pouring? Also what colors seem to work the best for you?
The last time I was out a friend gave me a bright orange one with yellow tails and blue highlights. I couldn't keep the ling cod off of it. Before he gave me that I couldn't get one to bite.
Thanks,
Ed

Re: Molding Your Own Jigs
Deepsleeper, I have a friend in Riddle who is very active in Bass fishing. He makes his own rubber worms and grubs and would know about this question. I am trying to contact him and will get back to you when I do.
I think making your own gear is a beautiful thing. If you can figure out how to do the homemade rubber fishing stuff, tell us.

Deepsleeper,
Was cruising the web and found this link, looks pretty good.

If I come across anything else I will let you know.

Re: Molding Your Own Jigs
Thanks Sturgn, Pilar & Slow Roll. Looks like I will have enough reading to keep me busy until I get the rest of the info in. I will let you know how I make out. Maybe I will even send you some rainbow colored jigs.

Re: Molding Your Own Jigs
I would appreciate it John. Doesn't look like anybody else makes their own jigs. You'll have to let me know what color you want the next time we go bottom fishing. After halibut season of course.
Thanks,
Ed

Re: Molding Your Own Jigs
try these two links:
http://www.do-itmolds.com/
http://jannsnetcraft.com/
Between the two of them, you ought to be able to find most everything you need, although you'll need the Jann's Netcraft catalog to see their full range of lure making supplies

Re: Molding Your Own Jigs
Ed
The place I get my supplies is Lurecraft . They have the best selection of molds and colors. The colors shown on their page don't do the real colors justice. I have 3 color combos that the lingcod LOVE. Next time I see you (Halibut) I will bring you a few. I just ordered 5 gallons of plastic to knock out a few years supply. Startup cost is kind of high because of the molds, but once you get going you can knock out the twin tail scampis for about .15 ea. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Re: Molding Your Own Jigs
Thanks a lot Ron! Nice to see you on the board. I like your moniker. I guess by ustafish you mean that now you only catch them. Because I definitely know you still fish! I am busy setting up a router and running ethernet cables all over the house right now. I will try to spend some quality time on that web site tonight. Thanks again Ron. I can hardly wait for the halibut fishing. Don't forget your spear. I know we are going to need it.

Re: Molding Your Own Jigs
A couple more choices
www.luremaking.com
www.lurecraft.com
Or just machine your own customs out of aluminum
