Snake River Unit - Dead Bear
After a 5 hour stalk, and wait... over the radio crackled the phrase "Blonde Bear Down"
My hunting partner Jordan arrowed his first bear in some nasty country. I spotted the bear two ridges away, and Jordan was off to the races, not taking much in the way of food or water, he just humped it over to the ridge. By the time he got there, the bear was down in the opposite draw in the timber.
Instead of packing it in, and calling off the stalk to wait for another opportunity, he decided to sit the bear out for nearly 5 hours. Seeing that the ground was torn to pieces from him working the biscuit root, he figured that the bear would be back. And he was correct.
The bear made his first appearance at nearly 100 yards working over the rocks. Jordan moved down from his perch, and made the final stalk to where he could get a good range at 35 yards.
He pumped one arrow into the bear, and he whirled down hill and then like all good bears should do, he came back uphill. Awaiting was Jordan at full draw with another arrow. Jordan slammed the bear at 45 yards, and the bear took a tumble like no other.
Tumbling, falling and rolling the bear finally rested nearly 1000 yards from where he shot, down in the most rugged country around.
We went down for photos, and to take care of the bear. And barely made it to our bivy camp spot before dark, on top of the ridge.
We spent the next day packing our gear and camp back to the truck. We then, drove about 2 hours around to the bottom of the creek, stayed the night at the trailhead in preparation for about a 7 mile hike in.
We finally got to the bear, fleshed the hide a bit more, boned out the meat and worked our way back out.
This spring has been very tough for Snake River/ Wenaha and Chesnim hunters. Not too many bears being seen and access to areas is very slim due to the snow.
But it should shape up late in the year.

Re: Snake River Unit - Dead Bear
Great Job Guys........Congrats to Jordan! I always like to see things done the hard way when it comes to hunting...............More memorable, more rewarding. HUNTING at it's finest. I too had a bivy camp on a ridge in the Snake River unit ('03 archery elk)...............great views, great photos. Brings back memories. Wheels.

Why is it they always flop and roll into the deepest available hellhole? Nice job - an archery bear in that country is hunting skill at it's finest!

Congrats! Not many as many bears have been taken in the NE due to the snow level. Looks like you had a great hunt.

Re: Snake River Unit - Dead Bear
Way to go guys! I get goosebumps every time I see pics of those canyons over there. Was over there last year for spring bear, saw 5 bears but kept blowing the stalks. Already looking forward to my archery elk hunt over there this Fall. Way to do it the hard way!

Nice work... I spend some time in the snake every year at the end of May chasing around those elk killers. Your pics answered my questions about the snow. I have my own honey hole so I am not looking for yours but could you share the elevation? Looks like the L.O. saddle area am I close?
One more thing. Where is the best early morning breakfest in Joseph?

We were at about 4500 ft. down to 1500 ft. The snow level seemed to be right at 5000 ft. This weekend, we will see temps in the 70's and 80's, so it should green up and melt soon. No, we weren't near L.O. saddle. The only L.O. saddle I know is about 15 miles from where we were at. But there may be more than one in the area.
Hmmm Breakfast in Joseph. The Cheyenne is pretty good, but you never know when it is open. Mountain Air Cafe is pretty darn good. Friends restaurant in Enterprise is really good as well.

"FRIENDS" is the name of the restaurant. Not a friend of mine, but the name of the cafe. Kind of confusing. But it is on the corner right after you make the right hand turn heading south. Right across from the Radio Station.
If you miss it, come on into Joseph, and hit up Mountain Air
