Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
Ok, well it's that time of year again and every day I get calls asking me for a seat to go Halibut fishing in May. How about we all commit to the crew assignments we have and try to find seats for the guys who have never done this before......
Come on boys and girls, we can't stir up all this love for the sea and let it go unrequited!
'Pilar' confirmed crew roster, weather permitting.
Departure point, Newport, at first light, destination, the Chicken Ranch.
Die Flattie Die!
May 10 - Johnboy, Mr. Fisherman, and Rick Hales
May 11 Johnboy, Jennifer and Ramstrong
May 17 Johnboy, Mr. Fisherman, and Rick Hales
May 18 Johnboy, Mr. Fisherman, and Gary Gebhardt
So far I have interest from Gary Gebhardt, Kevin Beckman, Kelvin Crawford, Jennifer Johnston and a few others evidently only casually interested. You folks mentioned, what dates do you want ... bribes accepted cheerfully, although it may not get you a seat.
Who is on your boat and do you have any seats for newbies?

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
Pilar,
I appreciate everyone here being willing to take a newbie or even an experienced fisherman out on a trip with them. Matter of fact I think it is incredible. This is a great group of people.
Unfortunately I am not going to be able to make any Hali trips this year.
Next year will be different, hopefully, will have the dollars to get the gear that I need for butts and Tuna.
Until then, I will continue to live my fishing life vicariously through you guys.

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
Well I would love the opportunity to be able to stack flatties. The only day's I would be able to go are weekends, I know most other potential crew are the same so that lowers my odds of getting out. But would surely appreciate anyone in need of crew hooking me up. If no one has any seats maybe you could tow Dave and I in some float tubes ?

NorRivDave is going to assist me in my boat on the 17th and 18th. I may have an additional seat available but I won't know for couple of weeks. If my wife doesn't go and I don't have any relatives hounding me, I will take one more. I am starting to get the urge to feel salt spray in my face.

Oh, I haven't told Dave yet but he doesn't get to ride inside. How fast can you tow those inner tubes anyway? Don't tell him, it will just be a surprise.

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
I would love the opportunity to tag along with any of you guys with an open seat. Caught the halibut bug in Alaska a few years ago and haven't been out since. I am ready to commit to any/all of 11th, 12th, 17th, 18th, 19th. What I lack in gear and a boat I more than make up for in beer/bribe money! This is great guys, thanks for the opportunity.

The Double Gaynor, We will be heading out of Newport at first light. Our boat holds four to fish. 5 is a bit crowded, but depending on the expressed need, I think we could make do.
10th Captn, Krystalflash +2 guests
11th C, KF + 1 or 2 open seats
17th C, KF + 1 or 2 open seats

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
Johnboy,
Check your dates!
I think we are going 10th and 11th and 17th and 18th unless we are fishing inside 30 fathoms. If you want to stay an extra day and fish for other target species I'm game.
As long as we are planning put me down for August 2nd and 3rd too .
Gotta love it!

I would love to go!! I don't have the gear to handle this type of fishing but I would be willing to
pitch in the funds required. Any Day would work for me. I have never done this before but would love to give it a try. Thanks

I am supposed to have crew from out of town. If these guys fold on me, then I am going to need two, with their own gear. I will post about two weeks out if I need the crew.

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
I am interested in a flattie trip out on the big blue. Would put money in the pot for fuel, food, ice ect. Have my own pole and reel but no gear like lures, weights. Contact Dave at 503-663-0646,
I have never fished for a flattie and would love too.

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
I would love the oppurtunity to tag along for the first weekend if anyone still has a spot. I am experienced and usually take my own 22" boat which is out for extended repairs for The summer. If you look up the trhread about Team Bad Halibut from last August that is my boat and guest that I took out last year. I bring to the table great salt water experience, tackle, some killer co-ordiates, $$ (for whatever is needed), Beverages ect..
e:mail me if you have a spot.

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
Hi All Saltydogs,
I would also like to getopportunity for an open seat for the second week-end perferably the 17th. I have experience fishing for Flatties with Mr. Fisherman and a friend from Garibaldi. My biggest so far is 52#. I can also bring my own deep water pole and reel., help with gas and food as well as bait. I haven't gotten seasick out there either and keep a critical eye out for changing wheather conditions. My great grand father was named Rolling Thunder due to ability to judge oncoming storms and such. JK . I DO keep a constant eye out for any forseeable weather changes though.Did I mention I also bring top grade Elk and Deer Sausage or Jerky. MMMMMMMM!!!! Anyway, if anyone has an open seat for the second week-end or has someone cancel and has an open seat with minimal notification please e-mail me at saltom@hevanet.com. Thanks for any consideration. Tom

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
Ray your dreams have been answered. If you will do a little dancing for us we will let you be our beach Boy. I will set it up with my buddy. I was saving the spot for Dustin but he hasn't called me back and confirmed. It will be an honor to have you aboard. the boat is a 10' fiberglass boat that I have taken to calling the sea nymph it is powered by a 9.8 HP Nissian that usually runs and has a 3.5 gallon fuel capacity. I also only have one life vest and don't have the room for a second one. There will be four of us Backwood Rainier boys out in this boat 5 including you. Will you pratice your hog calling for us. By the way if you went fishing and fell asleep and woke up all alone and it felt like (dah dah dah dah dah) would you tell anybody?
Wanta go?????
You did say whatever it takes in your previous post.
Seriously the ride is a 22' cruiser (Grady White) in great shape just needs a couple of experienced crew members on board. We can ride up and back together and you can share a room with us if you want.
Dan!

Re: Who's on first? .. Seats for May flatties
Any EXPERIENCED folks still looking to crew later in the month of May????
I have a 21' 1966 Starcraft, that I would like to introduce to the open sea. I have very little open ocean history, and frankly am pretty nervous about the whole thing (but excited as well). I have a strong desire to gain experience out there!
I need a little time to get another gas tank installed, but she has just had fresh rebuild to the outdrive u-joints and bearings ($1700 - OUCH). Engine has been very reliable, and the boat has lots of freeboard and room on deck. The previous owner claimed to have ocean hours with her.
Let me know if anyone is interested, we could get together before hand and take a look at the boat, discuss gear, and have a beer!
