Newport a No-Go Today
Our trip got called last night due to boat issues. Then this morning I learned that most of those who did make it over the bar came back after a short run due to snotty seas - 4' wind waves. I heard some made it as far as the rock pile, but also turned back.
That's all I know today.

We fished Depoe on friday and did good so we stayed to fish Saturday. We went about 5 miles out and turned around. South wind about 15-20, no fish is worth the risk. I hope everyone makes it back safe.

Well, at least you did not have to make a false run to the coast and back.
Sounds like the actual 4' wind waves are worse than what NOAA states 3'.
The Halibut will be there next time. It appears they are getting small fish now.

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
It was no fun at all. We went out this morning. We were within a couple miles of the rockpile when the captain decided to turn it around and head back to the barn.

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
We got about half way to the Rock Pile and turned around. Bad south wind/waves. Bar was closed to under 22 feet when we got back. Interesting crossing going in. Everyone happy to get back to the dock. Even happier were those who didn't go out to start with.

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
We made it to the pile and decided to call it. It just got worse the further we went out. The new boat was handling the slop like a champ but we decided to stop and see what fishing would be like..... no go. Good experience running the new ride in very sloppy conditions and a semi-hairy bar crossing to top it off. I'd say that the forecasts were on the "best case scenario side"

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
Yep, NOAA was wrong again, this time on being too conservative. We bailed on the Ranch and thought the light house would make a good plan B. As soon as we reached the lighthouse the sheep came out. Heard several boats hail the coast gaurd asking them to put some eye's on the bar because it was REAL bad. Got our attention and slopped through some pretty steep sheep wishing we had never gone out. Made it back in just before the closing it sounds like. There was a mass exodus at the ramp. I'll never doubt wetsand's again. They nailed it. Hope everyone made it in safely.

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
We were 15 miles out and getting hammered at 7:30 a.m. Two 20ft. boats had a long ride in. I waited around Newport until 1 p.m. and the C.G. kept the bar closed for 25 and under thru the incoming tide. The wind chop must have been awfull all afternoon. Bob.

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
We launched and were waiting to go out when we listened to earlier boats reporting the slog. Too many boats were turning around, so we called it a day and had a great breakfast. Good call that tunaorlater made. Luckily we had a chance to get out on Friday to the Banana. We had to work for the three that came home and they were on the small side. Friday was a fun day and a ham steak on the plate for breakfast ain't a bad deal either.
Thanks to all that were reporting on the radio outside Newport. That helps the decision making. Nothing like hearing the ground truth from the captains on the water.

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
Lots of boats turned around today, crew voted to suck it up and we went and got 4 halibut to the boat at the chicken ranch. We released one little one, and only ended with 3 out of 4 tags punched.
Not many boats at the ranch today
It was a bit lumpy

WE left the dock at 4:30 am, nice bar then we got out aways and you know the rest. we decided to listen to the weather forcast again at 20miles out and decided to finish the run to the ranch. we ended up with only 1 #43, a sand shark and a lingcod. WE said to heck with it and headed back after about an hour and a half or so. The ride back Sucked at best. SNOTTTYYY! WHich boat were you guys in? Probably saw you since there were so few boats. We were in my 26' Striper CC. Again good job and for those of yo uthat called it early.... Good joba as well!

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
We were in the only Edwing at the ranch today.
No paint, 23 foot cabin, Honda outboard, rocket launchers everywhere
I never felt in danger today, it was just hang on fishing. Lots of rocking and rolling. When the CG changed the closure from 20 feet to 25 feet at the bar at low tide when I expected the bar to get better, I decided it must be time to head for home and beg for permission to cross After a couple hours of running, the closure went back to 20 feet before we got there.

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
Roy,
Thanks again for a good time on Aces & Eights. Today's conditions put the sport in sportfishing and its always nice to have the CC within sight.

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
We ran outdd to the 10 mile mark or so and turned around as it was deteriorating fast. It was definatley the right choice it was a mess out there and we took a dandy over the bow as we crossed the bar no fun for shure.
We did manage a few nice butts on Fridays run the biggest going around 40lbs or so.
Got to meet a few Dogs to boot so it wasnt a wash by any means

Re: Newport a No-Go Today
We got out on Newport CJ's Boston Whaler "Sea J" and headed out to the far side of the Rock Pile with a slight hesitation on top of the pile to consider weather to fish or not. When the bar restriction went up to over 25' we were already almost to the fishing hole so we decided to go fish and wait for the tide to come in and settle the bar down a bit. We got our fish but it was a bit sporty. Comming back it got real exciting at the east side of the Pile with an honest 6 and 10 at VERY short intervals. Gotta love those pyramid waves. By the time we got back to the bar it was open to over 20 and was comparativly smooth compared to the ocean we were just in. It's days like today that you need to know your skipper and know he's got his act totally together. CJ did a great job with a very seaworthy boat that he knows well. Somebody should start a "Know Your Captain" thread. Oh yea somebody already did. With a lesser captain and vessel it could have really sucked but all's well that ends well. Back in with some quality butts and crab made the sore mussels and slightly tatered nerves all worth while.
