Re: DSC Radio
Not yet, but after this weekend, I am a believer. I will have one before year's out. That is cool stuff. Downside is you need people to play with. If they don't have DSC or you don't have their MMSI number, all you have is the safety feature.

Re: DSC Radio
letstroll,
How bout some manufacture's names, model numbers and who carries them around here. If you have one you must have done your homework.
Thanks

DSC Radio
Down in CA, I got to play with some of my buddies radios with digital selective calling (DSC). This stuff is WICKED COOL.
1) Safetey. Push a button, your radio relays your position to the coastguard and sends a mayday. At least until it is under water. For this reason, I say Epirb is better.
2) Convenience. You can call your buddy, and it doesn't matter what channel he is on, he receives your hail. Assuming you both have DSC of course.
3) Stealth. You can request your buddies numbers, and he can send them to you, and it's all digital. No words exchanged over the radio at all.
My buddy Lon and I hailed our friend Michael, 7 miles away. He was immediately switched up to our channel, 88, where we chatted for a while. Then he said he was hooked up and had to go. We wanted to be hooked up, so we did a position request. Since his radio was set to auto answer our position request, he popped up on our chartplotter, with his name next to the icon. Very very very cool.
We all gotta get one of these.

Re: DSC Radio
Standard horizon has several radios below $200 that have the DSC capability. I thought that it would be really neat if all the buddies had this feature but it looks like its another programming pushbutton nightmare. I'll figure out how to set up my radio soon, I have the SH Intrepid, but have yet to get a gps or figure out how to set the dang thing up. here is some more info on DSC

Re: DSC Radio
I looked at Horizon, Raymarine and Icom. All have features that are quite similar to each others. I heard some very favorable user reports about the Horizon Intrepid. I like that it is submersible and available in black. West Marine and Boaters World have quite a few to look.
FYI- here is a good link to register on line to get your MMSI code# BOATUS The best part is that it is free. One thing that is kind of intereting is that you can put your code in once and then a second time but to put in a third time radio must be returned to for factory service. Something to think about if you were looking at used units. My GPS does not have an NMEA connection so I cannot use the GPS features.
I am looking at fishfinder mapping units for my next purchase (thats another story)
