My son and Obama
My wife and 11 year old son Ben got up early this morning and stood in line to see Barak Obama today. They got front row seats.
My wife says she had to talk Ben into going but in the end he can't quit talking about it. What a great experience they had!
Ben got to shake his hand and my wife got her book signed.
Ben said the Secret Service was intense. They studied a banana in his Grandmothers purse like it was a weapon. Kinda funny!!
I don't want to get all political here but they said they really enjoyed what he had to say.

Re: My son and Obama
When I got to my last facility today over off Millikan there was a crowd gathered across the street and lots of Police men, It was Apparently Mr Obama in one of the building over there. They were waiting for him to exit into his bus.

Re: My son and Obama
I think it's great your son, and his mom, got to see and be part of the process up close and personal like that. I would think it will help instill in your son a sense of understanding and responsibility for our role in this game.

Everyone has been complaining about the drawn out process this year, but it's nice to see Oregon being involved so late in the game.

That sounds like a great experience for him. Regardless of politics he is a great speaker. Probably something your son will remember for life.

5th graders didn't have school today or yesterday. We would have pulled him out for this anyway. Seemed pretty educational. Thanks for being concerned though. Grant

Re: My son and Obama
John Mccain will be coming to town. Hope he gets to see him too.
Btw, I'm announcing I am running for Mayor of Portland. Would your son like to meet me?
Actually Grant, that is a neat experience for the young man. Good for you to expose him to the American experience.

Probably more educational than most days spent in the classroom. Sorry, not meant as a slam on Oregon teachers.

A guy that I work with was eating lunch at the local mexican restaurant in Woodburn when Obama stopped in for a burrito. He shook his hand and got a mug shot taken with him as well. I don't think that this was an announced stop as he was 1 of the few people in there.

When I was a kid, my mom took me to see Ronald Regan when he was up for re-election. I didn’t know politics from bunny rabbits, but I’ll never forget the experience. It’s truly an American experience to see the process for your self. Plus I thought the Secret Service snipers were really cool.

Re: My son and Obama
Great learning experience for your son!
Played in a rock n roll band as a kid, and we were asked to play at a campaign stop for Robert Kennedy when he was coming through S. Oregon. One of the other parents said "no!"...and so we didn't. Would like to have done that...

On one side there is John McCain - Good person with some good views and some that people disagree with.
On the other side there are two people who are looking to make it to their parties nomination.
Hillary Clinton - Good person with some good views and some that people disagree with.
Barack Obama - Good person with some good views and some that people disagree with.
To the best of my knowledge all are Americans, all are above the age of 35 and no matter who wins there will be some unhappy people.
There is the rundown of the candidates in a nut shell.

True. But what constitutes political is pretty subjective. There are ten mods and no way can they all agree on every decision. They just do the best they can and deserve our appreciation for their efforts.
On the other hand, JL's comment is about the most non-political political post possible.

So it would be ok if I posted the following as a new thread?
My wife and 11 year old daughter Josie got up early this morning and stood in line to see Barak Obama today. They got front row seats.
My wife says she had to talk Josie into going but in the end she can't quit talking about it. What an awful experience they had!
The secret service refused to let them close enough to shake his hand and Obama refused to sign her book. Maybe next time. They were really disappointed about that considering how much time they invested.
Josie said the Secret Service was intense. They studied a banana in his Grandmothers purse like it was a weapon. Kind of rediculous!!
I don't want to get all political here but they said they really hated what he had to say.

Re: My son and Obama
There's not at all any problem with a post like this thread, or that proposed post Jim. Heck, if Grant took his kid to see John McCain next and wanted to post a thread about it, that'd be great.
It's making partisan political comments that gets removed. Things like "Oh, that candidate is a tool", or "That candidate is the only one running who has a clue" get removed.

The non-conforming portion of the original post was removed.
As long as those posting here keep it between the lines, no problemo.

Re: My son and Obama
The best thing about ifish is the fact that poltical nonsense isn't allowed. A thread like this is great though. Notice how everybody walks the line and nobody starts arguing? Politics divides us (some would say it's meant to). It's nice not to have to worry about that here.

The mods will rely on the rule that partisan political content is not permitted. People that don't like the rule will either depart on their own or will be escorted to the door. Many may not remember the election 4 years ago, but there are a handful of folks that are no longer members as a result of their insistence on trying to provide us with their political perspective. My advice: don't push the rules unless you are ready to find another internet forum to spend your time on. We're here to share the common appreciation for a sport, not to measure how wide our political differences are.

Re: My son and Obama
I think it is awesome that your son and wife got to have the experience of hearing a presidential candidate speak in person like that Grant, no matter who it is or what their party affiliation!
It's been said already but I don't think it can be said enough. Your son will NEVER forget that, and in this old jarhead's opinion, the older your son gets the more he will appreciate you for it! Excellent choice for a field trip!!

Re: My son and Obama
40 years ago I was 10 and went to the high school football stadium that was just down the block from my house. I watched Robert Kennedy give a speech. I have no idea what he said but there sure was a commotion about his presence. I remember him riding away in a convertable, sitting up on the back waving and shaking hands as they drove across the athletic field to get to the road.
That was June 2, 1968.

My 2 cents - I will not be egregiously unhappy with any of this years' candidates. I think any of them will be a reasonable representative for our country. I think McCain has served his country as much as we can ask any person to have done. I think Hillary has done so as well. Barack just impresses me when I hear him speak. They are all smarter than the average bear, and I think all want to do the right thing for the country, though their opinions differ in how to do that.
This is the first time in 30 years I have felt this about the field.

I think they are all great speakers. They say what you wan't to hear. But they don't say how they will be able to solve the problem. One of the biggest thing to solve will be our oil problems. We have enought of our own oil. The big Question will be. When will we start drilling?

Re: My son and Obama
Grant, All politics aside, it is a great experience for anyone to meet a candidiate for President or the President himself.
I drew duty once during the Nixon years when he came to Portland. I was on Sandy at an intersection the motorcade was coming by. One, may I say longhair? was trying to rile the crowd and kept firing profane bombs about Nixon. Well it just happend that the open limo stopped right in front of him and Nixon started shaking hands with the crowd. The guy almost fell on the gound in awe. "Its' him, it's the president!" Everyone got a kick out of his reaction, because he forgot all about how much he despised the man.
Your son will remember it all his life.
