Halibut gang run?
Well I just talked to Deepsleeper and were going to try all 4 days for the halibut, I was wondering if anyone else wants to get together and run out at the same time we do, last year I left at around 5:30am and ran with no problems. GPS is a wonderful thing! My boats pretty full, but I will post here if I have any openings! So what do you think we should all get together and hit the hill at the same time?

I am planning on going the 17th and 18th. I have never chased halibut but have Duck will travel. I probably will have room for an experienced flat fisher, maybe two. Like I say, I am a novice at this so somebody needs to show me the way. I wasn't dumb all my life, just when I got older. I knew everything when I was 16.

Where are leaving from. I think we are going to try an do the 4 days also. I like the idea of buddying up. Lots of positives. Today my son and I were at Newport, and it was around 2:00 PM when we heard that a 32 foot vessel was without power and drifting. I couldnt figure how far out from the GPS coordinates, (still learning)but it isn't the kind of call I want to hear. So anyway, yes we will run with a group out of Newport. Pilar, are you in my boat, or are we jamming together?

Capt'n, I'm in the white on blue boat with all the fishers standing up with 50+ lb fish at the same time. You've seen this before Mr. Keizer fishing clinic.
I'm setting aside all four days. Typical deal is you get to fish 1/2 the days due to weather. We leave for the Chicken ranch, cross the bar at first light. Oh and the other 1000 or so boats too. 'Puffin' will be there and I'll run out with anyone that wants to, the more the merrier.
Early to the hole and back before noon with a full fish box. That's my float plan, Y'ont to?

Re: Halibut gang run?
Sturg, Angle, TV,
I'd take a ride with anyone who has a seat. My boat was sold in Jan. and I don't trust the 20 footer I have access to. To many electrical issues. Have rods, reels, hooks, weights, gps, radio, $$ to kick in, truck to haul a boat with, anything I need and extra gear. Just let me know.
Please somebody take me!!!!
It's really going to suck if I don't have any stories to tell this year, worse yet, not having any big vac. packed bags of white meat in the freezer will be worse.
Shoot me an e-mail if you have a small sliver of a seat available. Heck I'd even stand.

Re: Halibut gang run?
I'm in Dave's position. However with less resources available. I could bring my own rod and reel. I can scare up some weights, and should be able to bring tackle and such. I can contribute gas money, but have no tow rig or electronics. None the less I would love to be able to get out there and catch a bfb as I've not done it before and would be very appreciative of anyone who gave me to opportunity.

Re: Halibut gang run?
I should be down in Newport or at Garibaldi all four days. Depends on weather and crew. I can easily do Garibaldi both days and sleep in my own bed.
Plus I am a little worried about my crap trailer. Anyway, I hope to get down to Newport to do the flatty/salmon thing with John (Pilar) and Jon (Puffin) at least one of the weekends.
I should have crew from out of town, but if not, I will be soliciting, esp from people with their own gear.

Re: Halibut gang run?
Hey Ryan,
Maybe we could tie up a couple of tubes and drag behind. Can you hold onto a tow rope for 2 hours? I bet I could if I had to, but I'm not sure if my arms would be willing to reel up any fish afterwards.
Have rod and reel, will travel.
Three big crab pots too. Had four, but crafty friend didn't beleive me about the tides in Tillamook bay last weekend. Last time I loan those out.

Hey lets call it F5 ... Go west young man! Maybe we can get a roll call going and get boats and crew hooked up.
I'd offer seats on 'Pilar' but it only seats three and they were given last year to people who missed out then.
On the other hand seeing you guys on a ski biscuit would be pretty cool. I wonder how fast to troll for Great Whites?

Re: Halibut gang run?
Looking at the tides, the May 10/11 dates are (at the Yaquina Jaws anyway) low tide a dawn and high tide around noon making a perfect escape and re-entry to the bay. On the May 17/18 tides, it is an outgoing tide at dawn and a minus tide on the ebb at noon.
Crossing the bar on the ebb is not generally a good idea. Do you stay outside until after 3pm and the incoming tide? The current goes slack around 2:30 PM. Just curious how you might handle that situation?
Also, if you are out 15-40 miles, what is the lag time on the tide? Ideal fishing in 600' of water is probably slack. When does it happen relative to the predicted tides on the coast?

Re: Halibut gang run?
SJP, good questions. Yes the first dates have perfect tides. The second weekend features an ebb tide in the morning. Of all the bars on the coast, Yaquina is the least affected by the ebb.
It is still something to be aware of and concerned about. There are other things to think about, however. I don't know about you but I am all about getting there and back before the wind blows in the afternoon. So I plan to fish the second dates as follows. Out over the bar at first light and to the hole. Back as early as possible and fish the bottom fishing spots near the beach.
If the bar is good and we can cross it on the way in, then go. If not then we go after the second (rockfish), third (Kings) or fourth (crabs)species that day.
It will probably be an interesting bar with the minus tides.
The other thing is tidal effects at the edge of the continental shelf. Tides are a coastal phenomenon. Islands and straights have tidal currents. An example is the area around Vancouver Island. Strong tidal currents aboound everywhere in that area of large tide changes.
Here in Oregon, we have moderate tides and the effect from them is minimal offshore. The Columbia river has a huge tidal effect far offshore which makes it a challenging area to boat in. The rest of the coast has tide effects in bays and near shore only.
There is a thing I see happen far offshore with the tides. It happens close to the beach too. The wind seems to calm most often at the high slack tide. The bite seems to kick in then too.
The flip side of that is the wind picking up on the ebb tide. Maybe this is because I fish most often on the full and new moon tides, where it is low in the morning and on flood till afternoon. When it ebbs it is time for the afternoon wind festival.

Hey Dave, I've got two float tubes. We could lash them together for the tow. Just don't know where we'd put the crab pots?

Re: Halibut gang run?
I've been lurking in the background, impatiently waiting for delivery of a boat I ordered at the boat show. Well it's supposed to be delivered to the dealer tomarrow and so next week I should be a boat owner and ready to go fishing finally.
I would appreciate the opportunity to go with a group of experienced Salty Dogs and may have a seat open. I'm getting an 18' Boulton with a 100 4 stroke Yamaha, I assume it will handle the bar OK.
Has anyone had experience with a similar setup? How much fuel will I need? It comes with a 30 gallon tank. I'll only be able to make the Saturday runs and I'll need some advice on gear.

Re: Halibut gang run?
Myles,
18 foot Boulton? Pump or prop on the Yamay? 30 gallon tank? What kind of hull is on this alum. craft?
I know what big John is going to tell you, and he does it better than most, so I'll let him type away.
IMHO, the conditions would have to be very good for me to run out in a semi flat hull sled (12 degree rise) again. I did it last year in a 20' sled and paid for it for three days. The swells were 4' w/ 12' of separation and about 3' of wind chop in the morning when we ran out. Beat myself and everybody else up for 2 1/2 hours getting out to the Ranch. 350 w/a pump burned right at 60 gallons of fuel while pounding through the water that everybody else was ripping through.
If your going to go in your new boat, you've got some work to do, but by god, have fun with it, and if everything looks ok, get your arse out there!

Re: Halibut gang run?
Thanks for the welcome guys, yeah I've been chomping at the bit for some time now. The boat is a variable hull from 32 degrees to 12 at the stern, with a prop. Wow 60 gallons, whats that about a mile per gallon? I went out about 4 yrs. ago with a guy from work to a place 22 miles out, is that where we're talking about?

Re: Halibut gang run?
Count me in I have a 19 foot sled with an extra seat if anyone needs a ride. I did alot of flatty fishing when I was stationed in Alaska but it has been a couple of years since my last trip. I have the gear, the boat, and the rig for towing but am a little empty on the knowledge. I have a 42 gallon tank on the Tacklebuster and will bring a little extra just in case. I too have a pump but my main power source is a 4.3 Vortec V6 so it should be a little more efficient than the 350's.
I think a roll call is in hand and a couple dry runs across the bar to some bottom fishing spots is a must. I would be willing to help set up for the roll call and what ever else is needed. FISH ON!!!

Re: Halibut gang run?
I am buying a couple extra 12 gallon tanks today to give me 100 total capacity. Found a place online that they are only 37 bucks plus shipping. I get about 1.5mpg if I take it easy, but who wants to take it easy? I want to go as fast as the ocean will let me!
Fuel Flow meter should be in by the end of this month and installed about a week early so I can get a good shakedown on it.
Should be good to go for long range trips!
Woo hoo! Fatty Flatty on!

Re: Halibut gang run?
Myles,
I think most of us are talking about going out to the Chicken Ranch which is about 32 miles out. The place I would think your talking about is the Rockpile.
I would get a good feel for your gas consumption before running that far out. 30 gallons doesn't seem like enough, but I've been pump sled'n and not prop sled'n, so I'm used to the gas going quick. Even so, extra fuel comes easier from the red 5 gallon jugs stored on your bow than it does from the shore. Hello Mr. Coast Guard Captn!

Re: Halibut gang run?
Pilar,
Will a 16' drift boat with a 10h kicker (Oars for backup) work for these halibut trips? I should have a GPS within two weeks and I'm the kind of guy that will learn it! I have no clue what fishing gear to use but have two excellent salmon rigs, two bait casting drift rods, and two new light steelhead spinning rigs. I have seasick pills and rain gear and should own a "Bottom Line side finder, Fishing Buddy II fish finder" by Saturday.
Ok, with that said, I can't tell from this post if the entire season is 4 days long per year? Is it? Also what are the dates?
Yes  this is April and I'm being silly, but you guys are getting me excited about these trips your planning. I fish salmon @ buoy 2 plus North or South a max of 10 miles on big blue on my brothers north river. That’s the total of my Ocean experience. I nearly never feel very good on the sea, but I've also have never puked
I have a satisfactory monthly fishing budget and would love to give this a try with you or with someone that can convince me that we will make it back to shore. I have great respect for the sea, actually it scares me and If invited I will be buying a Mustang inflatable.
So what are the dates and is there a possible seat opening??

Re: Halibut gang run?
Myles, is this boat a windshield and sit down drive or an open bow?
I hate the open bow in the ocean, one wave and you're done for.
You need some experience driving your new beast in the ocean and the Halibut run is not the place to get it. There is no worse place to run out of experience than 30 miles from the beach.
I suggest you crew on an experienced boat and learn the ropes on your guppy trip. Then learn your boat and get the green off before you commit to a trip of this difficulty level.
Let me say it this way ... this should not be your first or even your 10th rodeo

Re: Halibut gang run?
Well I may not make this run but I'll be "practicing" out of Tillamook whenever possible.
The boat is a windshield model, deep vee, 30 inch sides, 72 inch bottom with a 100 hp 4 stroke Yamaha. I had big water in mind when I bought it. I'd still like to be in on the run, either as a passenger or, if space is needed, let someone else take the wheel.

Re: Halibut gang run?
Myles,
As a fellow 18' boat owner, I must suggest that you take your new boat out to sea at least three times before attempting a long voyage like for halibut, including one borderline day. You'll want to have some 'too rough to plane' experience behind the wheel for a long distance trip. The chicken ranch is no place to discover a "bug" in your new boat, and new machines always have them.
OBSERVE THE TWO OF EVERYTHING RULE: (2 engines, 2 fuel supplies, 2 fuel filters, 2 water separators, 2 navigation systems, 2 radios (or buddy system), 2 batteries, 2 bilge pumps, 2 times as many tools as you could possibly need, 2 flares, 2 life preservers, and two guys to prey if you screw up.) 18 foot boats don't often come with two of everything. So it's safe to say that if you'll be making the run to the chicken ranch, with any sense of security, you better get busy!
Feel free to email me if you need some pointers.

Re: Halibut gang run?
Man you guys got them big shiney silver balls dont you? Where do you get those from, I always wanted me a pair! I feel uncomfortable heading out in my 25 footer let alone 18 footer. So how many boats do we have running together for each day? I will be leaving from South Beach all available days, and I wouldnt mind running with others out and back, but you better get your flatties quick cause I aint stickin around for nobody! Just kidding, I am so excited about these damn thing's I have dreamed about rigging and boat preperation for the last 2 nights!
I will be in Astoria for 4 days a week for the next 3 weeks if anyone needs anything from Englunds let me know!
P.S. Anyone in Astoria want to take me fishing for Springers on some lonely afternoon?

Re: Halibut gang run?
Pilar has an exellent point. Your boat and it's skipper need to be perfect, proven, and green free before you go for halis on even a dream of a day. Let's see how much salt you can get in the boat before then. Do you even know how to decipher the NOAA reports?
Currently, there is a window of opportunity for you to get some salwater experience. Based on current predictions, that window closes Monday afternoon. It's Sunday afternoon...how spantaneous are you feeling? Tomorrow will be a peach.
Today
