Hi Scott, I see you took Gizmo out and showed him how to catch fish. It is nice to see you donating to the AARP

I have gone thru several of the Mr. Heater cooker type heaters, but have a problem with the little wire screen at the center of them rusting away. Maybe it has to do with the cooking of oysters on them

The last one I got had a ceramic center so it wouldnt rust away. I have been told when it gets hot the ceramic may shatter if it gets splashed with water. It hasnt been tested yet with a big splash.

I know Home Depot use to sell the Coleman type heaters.

I got mine at the gas connection in Portland (there are a couple stores in the area)

I'm looking for a new propane heater as well. Mine fell over in the boat and broke the cone in the center, it was so brittle it just shattered. I am looking for the type that attaches to the top of a 5 gal. propane bottle. Most of the ones I see from Mr. Heater, and Primus, have a big air intake of the stem. I have found this type to be very prone to blowing out in the wind. My old one had a metal shroud that covered this opening, and was very good in windy conditions. If anyone runs across a heater like I am looking for please let me know. I remember in years past seeing Guides running up the Clachamas with their heaters going full bore, and not blowing out. I asked Steve Koler one day what the brand of heater he used, he told me, but I can't seem to recall the name. I have checked w/ the Gas Connection, and they don,t know what I'm talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

My red eyes are terible in the wind (round type)
the rectangle colman seems to much better. i've been told that they have a low o2 sensor so you can use them indoors, however the 5 gal. tank says "OUTDOOR USE ONLY" i use my red eyes indoor under close supervision for instant heat. from what i've seen in propane heaters, the colman 45,000 btu unit is the ticket. they have three settings with 30,000 being the lowest. i don't know about turning the main valve closed a little the reduce the gas pressure.one other punch for the colman is the heat raduis seems to much wider than the round red eyes. which are screamming red. I think that shortens the wire mesh life span. if you buy the big dog and leave it on low to med you make get a better life out of the heater.

The heaters that work even while the throttle of your boat is wide open on the river are the Coleman square ones. They are great.

I got mine at Home Depot, but last trip in there, they didn't look like they were carrying them. Ollie Damon's in PDX has them, along with some "off" name hardware stores.

If you try "CustomerService" at Coleman.com..you might be able to get them thru that route also. All the parts are available in their parts section.

You certainly won't be dis-appointed if you can get your hands on one.

Scott-if your coleman is model #540-751, i have the parts list in front of me, i can give you the part numbers or fax it to you. I re-built my old coleman, its better than anything on the market.

Scott
I was at Ollie Damon getting a piece for a reel today and they have a stack of heaters, coleman model with the square shroud.

They had the following on the floor for sale

11 each Reconditioned 9K to 15K BTU at 54.95

4 each New 9K to 15K BTU at 64.95

2 each New 10K to 17K BTU at 69.95

He told me the reconditioned ones are new and never used. They were sold to one of the big 'marts (ie. Walmart) and were returned when not sold. Coleman opens the box and checks them, then reseals the box and sells them as reconditioned.

If you are interested they can be reached at 503-232-3193 or at 236 Grand Ave, Portland.
