unsuspecting fish
Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I was fishing the other day and it felt like I had a take, so I set the hook and nothing but a little resistence, so I reeled in and there was a line attached to mine so I grabbed it and FISH ON!!!!!!! It was a chromer of about 9pds and it took me about 10min to land it with no pole, it was a very interesting fight to say the least. I think I was able to land it because there was about 50 yds of line attached to the hook (approx 10pd line) and the hook was completly burried in the fishs snout. Anyone else have anything like this happen to them before?

Re: unsuspecting fish
Sounds like that was your lucky day man!! Very Nice!! Never had it happen to me, but i've had friends snag what they thought was the bottom. Turned out it was line that had a fish on the end of it!

Re: unsuspecting fish
Same thing happened to me last year. Caught some line and decided to get it out of the river so i spent the time to reel it in so i could grab the line and get it out. Lo an behold there was a fish on it. Died laughing.

Re: unsuspecting fish
On Saturday in the last hole of our float, I told my partner to reel both rods up. One rod was in the boat and the line on the other rod started to go up stream. We hooked someone's line that a nice 8# nate broke. Looks like they were night flossing the steelhead. Two big glow corkies and about a 4/0 hook.

Re: unsuspecting fish
I have seen a few fish caught like that it's quite a suprise.
I did pullin a couple fishing rods before yesterday I was pulling plugs and noticed one had stopped working so I told my buddy to grab my rod and reel it in. he reeled untill I could see some line on the plug I had him grab the line to get it out of the water and up pops a nice lamiglass plug pulling rod with about 30 yards of line out I said heck maybe it got pulled over by a fish reel that line in no fish but I got a nice plug
another time I was drift fishing and hooked what I thought was a stick it turned out to be another lamiglass rod and reel combo .
no luck with getting a fish that way but I am thinking I like the rods better even though I cant smoke them lol

Re: unsuspecting fish
Ive always wondered about the broken off, leaders/hooks-corkies tied to the main line still floating in the waters...surely the chances of a fish biting one of these is possible..
When I was 15 years old my main line broke while fighting a summer steelhead, later that same day i saw my bobber float right by along a bank ledge I grabbed the bobber and line and saw a flash in the water It was the fish I had lost earlier that day! but there was no way I could pull it in with my bare hand holding the line.
Anything is possible I suppose.

Re: unsuspecting fish
Hasn't happened to me personally (yet), but my dad got one that way on the South Coquille years ago.

Re: unsuspecting fish
Had this happen to me wife and I last summer. We were fishing near the mouth of the Kalama, when My wife reels up this huge mess of line. I untangle her and start wadding this line up so i could dispose of it when we got back to the launch, I started hand over handing it to the boat and started getting some resisitence. I thought there might be a log or snag attahced to the other end, but it was coming up. Envisioning a nice log covered in plugs, and spoons and other gear, I stood up and pulled and pulled. When the "root" ball got within 5 feet of the surface Thats when I realized what it was a huge salmon, and I think thats when he realized he was being pulled up, and he took off like a dart!! Now, the bad thing is I had two fistfulls of probably 30lb ultragreen. When Mr Spotty tail took off the line started getting tighter and tighter around my fists. My amusement turned to panic, and I quickly made 2 or 3 wraps around the cleat. The line went tighter and tighter and then finally snapped. I looked at my hands gald to see them both still there. Man what I would give to get a good look at that boy. He definately had some shoulders!! Im sure he was happy to have that tangle of line removed!

Re: unsuspecting fish
That's how I got my first springer. Below Rivermill someone had broken off about 10 yds above their bobber. The bobber was swimming around the hole so I snagged it, got it tied to my mainline without the fish knowing it and it was fish on after that. It's a bit of a longer story than that, but this'll do.

Re: unsuspecting fish
Several years back I was Sturegon fish above Tounge point. We had been slayiong them all day.
I got a bump on my rod set the hook and came up short. Secondes later I felt some pressure and then all heck broke loose. As I reeled up I saw a rope coming out of the water. I ended up catahing a 48 plus fish that someone had caught someone had ran a 1/2 inch rope about ten feet long through the gills and out the mouth. The only thing I could figure was someone needs to learn how to tie knots. We removed the rope and sent the fish back to fight another day. The rope is still in the boat.

Re: unsuspecting fish
This summer while fishing for steelhead I was walking along the bank back to my truck. I took a step off a rock and spooked a fish resting the near the bank. The splash the fish made spooked me just as much as I had spooked the fish, but it didn't take off across the river, I could see it resting about 15 yards off the bank. That's when I noticed a west coast float following the fish around.
Being the sly guy I am, I started casting a spoon to the float, thinking I'd spook the fish on my first cast with the lure. To my surprise, the fish did not move, and on about my fifth cast, I hooked into the line between the lure in the fish's mouth and the float. Luckily, whoever had broken off the fish knew how to use good float stops, and I was able to land the fish! That is one of my most crazy fishing stories. My friend was with me, and he'll tell you it did in fact actually happen!

Re: unsuspecting fish
Last October I was trolling in the John Day Arm, when I saw a bobber pop up next to the boat. So I motored over and grabbed the bobber. Just as I started pulling the bobber and attached line into the boat, I found that there was a fish on the end of the line. Unfortunately it broke off before I could get a glance at it.

Re: unsuspecting fish
I've had a couple similar experiances. One time I was drift fishing a hole on the S. Sant. and I thought I was hung up. I first thought it was a fish, then I thought it was a stick, it was actually an Abu Garcia reel. Another time I was fishing a spot on the S.S. and I seen a bobber with some line hanging off the top that was going upstream. Then a fish came leaping out of the water attached to the line and bobber. That fish wouldn't stop jumping! -SSS
