Favorite Big Game
So you only get ti hunt for one type of big game the rest of your life. What is it? This can be any place in the world.
I'm staying close to home with Roosevelt. Archery during the rut.

Excellent choice. I do believe that taking a rifle deer in Oregon is more difficult than taking a rifle elk.
What I like about coastal elk rifle though is that big bull or young bull I can track the critter in mud or snow. With the average shot being less than 60 yards I can get up close and personal with my coastal bulls. I Like That !!!
What a rush to turn the gravity on high (using a 308 etc) on a soaking wet roosevelt bull that is not a dumb animal in the rut.
(Please consider that I have hunted them in archery season too. It just is not quite as fair in my opinion.... Like an elk with 1/3 the IQ)
Coastal and Cascade bucks are my second choice because I can hunt then with out some yahoo showing up in an ATV.... Opps... Didn't mean to turn this into a rant.

I love to hunt elk but I have to admit deer has a special place for me so it would be deer.

I love the late season Whitetail hunting in Eastern Oregon with the
muzzleloader. But I do love to hunt elk and blacktail and mule deer also.

now don't laugh cause I am serious, ANTELOPE, are my favorite, I have been lucky enough to draw a Mt Goat tag and Killed a "Big Billy" I have killed a 180 bighorn, I have killed several bull elk and numerous deer, but antelope are the funniest, I have drawn an antelope tag 18 of the last 19 years and they are a hoot, you don't have to be there at first or last light and with good optics you will see hundreds of them in a day and when you see the one you want it is a game of hide and sneek and you talk about a pair of eyes, with 20 power vision you have to get down and dirty, but what a hoot IMHO. Maybe big Mule deer bucks with a rifle in Oregon if I could remember what it was like, but since I can't (too many years since there were big bucks), rifle bull elk in the Ochocos.

Re: Favorite Big Game
I am on a quest to harvest a 200 inch gross oregon mule deer. Elk are great but I have always thought a true trophy mule deer was top. Probably one of the most underestimated trophys coming on strong would be whitetail. If a guy killed a 160 inch whitetail over here it would be a pretty awesome trophy and they exist.

Re: Favorite Big Game
I have different favorites different times of the year, how can I choose just one?
My favorite in September is elk.
My favorite in November is Blacktail deer
My favorite in April/May is fair chase wild turkey (20# elk)
If I ever draw an Oregon Sheep tag, then that will be my new favorite!

Going after big Mule deer bucks is my dream and I'd hunt them in every state that has them if I could, but after last year, I'd hunt antelope every year if possible, they are fun to chase thats for sure!!

It depends.....who is in camp?
If it's only me, elk on the N coast.
If it's the whole crew in deer camp, then deer it is.

I live to match wits with a late season Roosie. To take a bull in his bed in his bull nest, that would be my ultimate hunt.

Rosie elk archery...that said, I can't say that I have had enough, any, experiences on other big game, in other states or countries. I'm sure there is something I would enjoy hunting as much, just haven't done it yet!

Re: Favorite Big Game
I'd have to go with Elk as #1 - Big, the best tasting of the bunch...
Blacktail #2 - just because I think they are the hardest to be successful with - the biggest "challenge"
Sheep/Mt Goats #3 (tie) - just because of the rarity of them, and the terrain they live in.
Moose/Antelope/Bison/Bear/mtn Lions #4 (tie)
Mulies/Whitetail #5 (mulies slightly ahead of Whitetail, but same "category"
Everything in Africa #6 - it would be cool, but I don't think I'd want to do it more than a couple times.

Re: Favorite Big Game
Problem is I've only hunted Oregon and the critters in it. I'm sure if I had been a man of the world my outlook would be different.
But, based on what I have hunted.....deer (blacktails/mule deer).

I agree that Antelope are the funnest to hunt. I picked blacktails cause they are the ultimate challenge in my book but for just a fun time Antelope are hard to beat and I have killed bighorn sheep, bear, dozens of deer and a bunch of elk.

Re: Favorite Big Game
Antelope, any weapon, all fun.
True desert mule deer (south central, SW New Mexico), but I hear that the extended drought and basically uncontroled mt. lion predation has ruined that hunting.
Archery elk, which I hope to do this fall for the first time in 16 years.
I'd love another chance at moose too.

Word.
Nothing like spotting something a mile away and trying to figure out how to cut that distance by 3/4 with little or no cover, twenty sets of sharp eyes around you, wind, cactus, etc...or, better yet, watching from a high distant vantage point while your hunting buddy puts the stalk on one.
