Default fun dive with wthr4d

Paul and I dove the OSU docks and had a good time. Good visibility.

Aside from the usual stars and anenomes
In the sand/mud bottom we saw a ton (a few hundred) of 2" long flatfish, baby flounder or something. We saw a number of clams with necks extended and "mouths" wide open drawing in water.

In the rocks under the dock we saw some cool things:
1 - white nudibranches, haven't seen these here before.
2 - I think we saw a Lewis' Moonsnail - well, we did see a huge snail with a cantelope sized shell atop a huge foot. Moon snails eat clams and there were a lot around. (http://www.scubapost.net/fieldguide/lewis-moon-snail)
3 - played with some crab

We didn't see the monkey faced eels that we were looking for. Rumoured to hang out in the rock crevases.

Paul - 31ft, 50F, 34 mins.

That was a Lewis Moon Snail. It had one of those egg spiral cases right next to it too.

I guess they can be eaten! Found this page on the Oregon DFW website: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp/shell.../moonsnail.asp

The clams and clam necks we saw were gaper clams: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/shell...boutgapers.asp

The ocean is too cool, new things just keep on coming.

You learn something new everyday! I thought that snail egg collar was scrap plastic. and MAN do gapers get BIG! those shellells that snail was eating were huge.

so next time I will take a game bag and clam rake.

John- Thanks for planning this out, I had a great time! stopped by Yaquina bay oysters on my way home and had a couple shooters for the road and a dozen smalls for Momma!

we definitely need to do this again. anyone who says there isn't anything good in Newport harbor doesn't know where to look.

Paul

Sounds like fun. Its been 8 or 10 years since i've been diving. Just reading about it sure brings back some memories.
