Shark Jumping
No, not the Happy Days "jump the shark" deal......................
Last season while tuna fishing off the CR we witnessed a rather large shark jump clean out of the water vertical. He appeared to come about 3 to 4 foot above the surface and make a darn big splash. Pretty certain it was a shark.
I know Mako's will jump like that. Seen pictures of great whites jumping. I have never seen a blue fin or any other shark jump out there. I would estimate the length of this shark or whatever it was to be about 8 foot or so. We were near a pile of jumpers when this fish breached.

Re: Shark Jumping
Thresher sharks. I was out with Marty one day and we were able to see them clearly. Long whip tail, full body breaches.

Re: Shark Jumping
Positive it was not a Thresher Mike. zero long tail deal. I do not recall seeing a bill either so that is eliminated.

That's pretty interesting. I've seen a lot of splashes, but until this year didn't know what they were. First one I ever saw close was with Marty.
There's strange things afoot at the Circle-K.

Re: Shark Jumping
Years ago about 3 miles off Laguna Beach I saw a huge shark jump. I saw the final part of the jump, where the shark had partially re-entered the water. From the dorsal fin to the tail was a good 8 feet, and the beast was 4 or 5 feet thick. I was in a rowboat at the time. Me and my buddy looked at each other and started rowing straight for shore...not a word was spoken. That shark had to be 16 feet long.

Re: Shark Jumping
Have seen many Mako's breach in Mexico and San Diego and when I was 14 me and 3 buddies were surfing Morro Rock on the moonlight and heard 3 very large splashes out side the wave line and we started pattling in as a VERY LARGE fin sufaced 20 ft from my buddy that was closest!! over the next week MANY half chomped seal littered the beach and some fisherman landed a 16 ft Great White!!! I never told my dad hat story because I snuck out after he was asleep!!!

Re: Shark Jumping
One of the TUNA trips we took out of Charleston last year wer saw some cool sharks! on our first trip I spotted a floating piece of lumber which is always somthing to watch! As I cruzed I saw a large fin brushing up against the board. A fin like I hadn't seen ever before. I told the guys and we eased on over to it. It was what I thought to be a 9-10 foot salmon shark. Only thing was is that it wasnt blotchy. It didnt even care about the boat and cam withing petting distance a few times. No one would have been able to pet though since everyone was standing int the middle of the boat. I know they are more blotchy on the underneath side but I wouldnt have been able to tell the difference from a salmon shark and a Mako. It was one of teh coolest things I've seen on the ocean. On the way out on our third trip one of my buddies said" who.. STOP.." I stopped the boat imediatelly and he told me he just saw a shark jump out of the water and swore it to be a t least 12' or so. I though ya right 12' is pretty big. We kept on and later in the day I personally saw a shark come out of the water about 100 yards away that was huge! I couldnt tell you exactlly how big but it looked to be a good 12- 15'. Neither one of these sharks was a Thresher. No long tail. I've heard of people seeing great whites, but its kind of hard to identify a shark at 100 yard. All I can say is that these things were big around. Nothing like a blue. Its kind of spooky to see these big guys! If you fall in the water, you are no more on top of the food chain!

Guessing the shark jumped about 75 feet away from us. Sure was cool to see something like that.

Thats the zillion dollar question-Folks (scientists) know very little about GW young-puping and 1st few years old. They occasionally get caught up in nets (smaller young GW's) thats how the Monterey Aquarium got theirs ( I now the boat builder of the Monterey Aquarium catch boat)
They do not know where they pup or the whole life cycle yet. Thats why you never see small ones or hear much about them. Its a big ocean and humans are small compared in many ways. Mark
