Thought I would say hello
Hello all,
I will be moving to Portland, OR in late July for a job. I am an avid bird hunter and I am looking forward to experience some new hunting oppurtunities in the pacific northwest. If any of you would like to give me your opinion on hunting in general, the portland area, etc feel free. If not you all take care good luck with the up coming season and hope maybe one day are paths might cross.
Dan

Re: Thought I would say hello
I am moving from east Texas, town called Nacogdoches. I am completing a terminal degree here at Stephen F. Austin State University. As far as birds go I am game for anything legal with feathers. My experiences so far are dove, quail, snipe, woodcock, ducks, geese, and turkey. Looking forward to the upland birds out in the northwest.

Re: Thought I would say hello
For those of you saying oh great a damn Texan moving up here, I understand your sentiment. However I am originally from outside of Philadelphia, then went on to college in North Carolina. I am not sure which is worse in the pacific northwest being a Yankee or someone from Texas. After my undergrad I had some fun (i.e., played some semi-pro soccer, worked at a car wash, and had early 20 something fun) and then decided to go and get my masters degree at a small school in west texas located in Alpine. During my time out in west texas I moved around and lived in Utah, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Florida, until I eventually moved back to east Texas to pursue my Ph.D. My research for my masters degree was on badgers and my Ph.D. work is on moist-soil managed wetlands and waterfowl specifically green-winged teal, blue-winged teal, and northern shovelers. I am married with a 16 month old son that I look forward to getting in the blind with me very soon. Thats a short recap/story of my life I suppose.

Yeah I am an atypical texan when it comes to big game hunting here in the state. Not one for high fences and feeders.

Re: Thought I would say hello
Oh great, a damn Texan from Penn. moving up here! I lived in the valley for a good number of years and the bird hunting there pretty much stinks, unless you want to pass shoot pigeons downtown. Once you get into the Cascades you should find some grouse. I haven't hunted them in years and never in Ore but gonna start in again this year. If you go east on I 84 to the John Day River Park, we used to take off from there going down river and did well on Huns, some Chukars and Pheasants.
My son was telling me about a place he found about three hrs east of Bend for Chukars that we'll go try this year. Lot of flatter ground that my old butt can get around in. Don't know where it's at for sure but probably wouldn't tell any way.
Think theres a lot of duck hunting in the valley but I don't hunt ducks so can't help there. Once you get south of Eugene and east of Government Camp, Ore changes.

Re: Thought I would say hello
I have a 4 yr old yellow lab and more then likely will be looking to get a pointing breed once I get up there and established. The guys I hunt with here all have brit's so I was lucky enough to have some running mates that supplied the dogs for upland game and I supplied the dog for waterfowl.

I have 2 Gordon Setters. As far as the wire-hairs I don't have alot of experience with them myself but from what you said about what types of hunting you do. They would be one of my first choices. They are a great all around whatever you need them to do type of dog. One of the guys in the club has 2 wire-hairs and I think they are a couple of the best dogs in the club.If your interested I could probably get more info for you or put you in contact with him directly or come check us out when you get to town. Let me know if I can be any help.

Re: Thought I would say hello
Welcome to Oregon!!! We have some of the best all around hunting that the USA has to offer here. We have the almost tropical rainforest of the coast range, the high desert of central oregon, the big timberland of northeastern oregon, and the plain old desert of southeastern oregon. Everything in between is here also. All you need you can just about find here on ifish just ask and someone will give you some advice. Just be sure to take some of it with a grain of salt not everyone will give up that secret spot but, most of the guy's here will help a newbe out!!! Look me up when you get up here. We'll go kill some birds.... Carl

Hello Daniel, welcome to IFISH, this is Chancellor from DHC.
You'll find this forum quite different from the others, alot of information sharing, and folks grouping up to do outdoor stuff.
The event in question is open to anybody, if you want to attend, that thread is your invitation/RSVP. You won't be overstepping your bounds.

Good morning and welcome to you, too, Brush Hunter. Forgive me if you're working on this. Otherwise, just to let you know, it's customary for new members to begin a new thread of their own and tell us a story and a little about themselves. You didn't do anything wrong - - someone just generally fills-in the new members re this and this time it happened to be me. Welcome. Don

Thank you for the help. I am trying to figure out I fish and there is alot to learn. Before I start my thread I want to upload my pics and I can't even figure that out. Its telling me my pics are to big for the file and they are just standard pics. There must be some trick to it cause other people have lots of pictures. So any help would be great thanks.

Sounds like with your moist soil management, you would be game for helping out some of the duck club types. I believe one of the main components to successful clubs is being in the right area and moist soil management.

Welcome Dan, looks like there might be 2-3 chukar get togethers this year, oct, nov and jan. There's enough dogs along that you're good to go. You'll like it, easy flat terrain, dumb slow birds, it's really great!

It's not like that, just show up or catch a ride with somebody. We set up a camp for a few days and people come and go as they can get away.
