Default Back-Bouncing Rod?

OK, OK, I know, salmon fishing is virtually over for the year, but hey, Springers will be around before we know it!

I'm looking at getting a couple rods for back-bouncing. Any recommendations? Specifically, has anyone tried the Lamiglas Northwest Special that's designed for back-bouncing (N 379 BC: 1 section 7'9" 1/2-6 oz. 10-25 wt.)?

Thanks.

Bubzilla, you have the right idea, start looking now for what you'll need and find the rod on sale.

I have a Lamiglass 1000 series back bouncer, # G1303 T, 7'6", 1 - 8 oz. This rod is definetly on the stout side and handles heavier weights well. A good rod for keeper size sturgeon too.

You have to remember the right back bounce rod can almost be a good everything rod.

My favorite rod for back bouncing is also my favorite trolling rod for salmon and keeper sturgeon.

I use Loomis HSR983C, one piece 8'2" GL2
14 - 30 line, 5/8 - 6oz. , Ex-Fast, Mag-Heavy
$206.00. This has been a great all purpose salmon rod. I also prefer the GL2 blank since I believe this blank is stronger and withstands more abuse.

The rod your choosing should work well too, best of luck,

Gregg

I have a Loomis BBR964C ... one piece, 8 footer for 12 to 25 pound test. I've used it for salmon with fine success and it's nice for keeper sturgeon. I hooked and landed an 8 1/2 footer on it earlier this fall, thinking the whole time that if I break it on a fish I get a new one, so I put a serious lean on it. I had Mr. Diamondsides to hand in 15 minutes, so I'm convinced it's stout enough for anything I target with it. I'm not sure the tip is quite as sensitive as I'd like, but that's not the way it's designed. At $160 retail, it's a pretty nice rod.

I also have the Loomis BB964's, I have two of them one is an older IM6 and the newer one is a GL3. Both excellent rods, use them quite a bit trolling for chinook and also backtrolling kwikfish. Made for back bouncing and that is where the excell, a lot of backbone. I have bounced 10oz with no problem at all other than that is a lot of work with that much lead.

Cant go wrong with the HSR983.

I stepped down one and bought (3) HSR982GL3 for the drift boat. Run two with KWIKFISH and BB one down the center. I fish the Wilson primarily.

If you are going to fish bigger rivers that require more lead, go with the 983 for trolling and BB.

Again the North River rods are on sale at Fishermans Marine. Their backbouncer is $69, and if it ever dies on you they replace it on the spot. Kinda hard to beat that deal.

Thumper hit it on the money. I have 3 Lamiglas Back Bouncers. This last year I bought a North River Back Bouncer and it performs as well as the Lamiglas G100 Back Bouncers. Another rod I like to use alot for back bouncing is the Berkley Buzz Ramsey series rods that are rated 15 - 50 lb. They are perfect action for back bouncing.

I have been using and selling a lot of TH 967c 8' 15-25# (Rainshadow blank) a great BB stick.. very strong handles 6 oz., but a nice tip for $150 it is an unbeatable BB rod.
Fully warranties.
I fish Gators with this rod on the Rogue and Coquille as well as Chinook in the bay trolling spinners and herring this is a very good all around 1 piece boat rod.

That sounds like a great rod TH. For the money and your quality work, that should make a great combination at a decent price. What I really like about that combination is the versatility. Like I already said, I fish a rod in that configuration for Buoy 10 salmon trolling divers and herring, Rogue bay trolling, Rogue spring chinook spinner/anchovie, back bouncing kwikfish/spin-glo-eggs, salmon ocean trolling w/herring, ocean bottom jig fishing, Tillamook trolling, and Astoria keeper sturgeon fishing. What a great all around rod configuration, strong butt, sensitive tip.

BTW, the only real difference between a true back bounce rod and hot shot rod is the larger diameter tip on the back bounce rod. Which in turns means a little less sensitivity on the BB rod. My preference is to use a hot shot rod for greater sensitivity. Trolling spinners or anchor fishing with spinners, you need to see the tip working, fishing sturgeon, I like to see the light biters, you can feel the difference. I do own a couple Loomis BB rods, except I prefer the HS rods.

best of luck,

Gregg
