OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
The other day, I was fishing in the Kilchis and I snagged into something hard. I pulled, the current pulled against me! I thought I was going to break off, but low and behold, I brought it in!
It was half of a wader! Just half! Half of a boot! The top half! Now... why??? Why would someone cut their waders off?
What weird things have you pulled up?
One night, many years ago, I hooked a jack and broke it off. He was snagged on some branches underwater, and my line finally broke off above the swivel.
Next morning, I went fishing in the same spot. I hooked a jack, the jack hooked the other jacks line, and guess what? I brought two live jacks up!
   My line with the morning jack, hooked into the line with the evening jack! Cool!
They were both alive! Poor fish, being snagged all night, I felt so bad! (BONK!)
Anyway, what have you brought up with hook and line that is unusual?
There's lots of STUFF down there!
Jen

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
A ROCK,
it was the size a little larger than a soft ball. bouncing a blue fox on the botton in about 60' of water. it had small divits like a golf ball on it. Tried simulate it in the boat but there was no way we could get it to stick.

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
My two favorite:
> A drift boat anchor that we "caught" while free drifting for Kings...we fought it for a long time thinking we had some old boot of a King
> A steelhead. We caught it by having our hook go through the eye of the swivel at the end of the leader of which the main line had broken off...on its first jump I figured we lost it cuz I saw the bait between us and the fish.

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
In 1979, snagged a working Mitchell 308 spinning reel and lower half of a broken Garcia glass rod. Caught it in the Salmon river in Idaho while dropping red eggs to the bottom of a deep pool.
I still use the reel today as my favorite trout reel!

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
I was drifting the Santiam a few summers ago for trout and hooked into something that felt big. At first I thought I was snagged but it was moving side to side and across the current. I kept reeling and it kept coming and then it broke the surface....A nice ultra light rod and reel
Took it home, cleaned it up and my daughters use it today

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
A buddy of mine got so frustrated with a spinning reel he was using that he took it off his rod and threw it in the Grand Rhonde! I snagged it two weeks later! . I snuck it into his office in Portland.I would have liked to have seen his face when he discovered it on his desk.

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
I've pulled in several unexpected things;
4 pound rock from 70 feet of water below Bonneville while sturgeonating, giant clam trolling the Ghost Hole, dandy crab outside the south jetty at Garibaldi (out of season), 34 pound chinook from 65 feet of water by Warrior Rock while sturgeoning ... but never anything really neat like a reel! I'm going to keep trying!

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
1989 I was fishing the remote Delta Lakes region of Alaska near the head of the Delta River, the start of a 5 day float with no exits along the way so its not often traveled. Casting spinners I lugged up a Patagonia synchilla jacket covered in slime, musta weighed 50 lbs. Washed it in lemon juice and you can catch me wearing it around town still. Matter of fact, I just took it to REI to return it to Patty for a free zipper repair.

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
While on a trawler in the Bering Sea, we pulled up a old WW2 mine in the net of fish
I was on a Japanese trawler that was fishing for pollock. The mine became quite clear as they dumped out the fish to the hatches below. I had my back turned at that moment and the next thing I knew, there was no one on deck but me
Everyone had run to the bow all freaked out. ALL HANDS OFF DECK!!!! Yee gads!

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
With a corkie/egg clump I caught a red/white daredevil spoon through the split ring, its treble hook buried into the dorsal fin of a 15lb red salmon on the Lewis that some guy (probably with the yellow eagle claw spinning rod) was trying to snag. After a beast of a fight, I released it to die a proper post coital death, kept the spoon for the lure hat. Doc

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
Last year I caught a Shad on a grub jig out at Clackamette park. The kooky thing was that my jig's leader had passed throught the split ring on a Dick Nite that was embedded in the fish's mouth.
If someone 'catches' my rod and real that I lost up the N fork of the Lewis silver fishing this year, let me know. Darn slippery egg goo...

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
When I was 8 or 9 years old I was on our annual fishing trip to Perigan Lake in eastern Washington. I was casting a rooster tail and I guess I reel a little to slow because I hook a knife a few feet from the shore at the boat ramp. The trebble got hooked between the blade and the handle. If my brother had not been there I may have gotten accused of swiping it. It was in perfect condition. I remember it being an Old Timer and being huge, so big my grandad kept it for me and ya know I don't think I ever saw that knife again.

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
A friend and I was fishing for summer fish in the Lewis and I hooked a fish and while fighting it, the steelie took his bait also. WE both landed that one and fought over the rights for several trips. While fishing out of Yakata Ak in the bay, I hooked a halibut and it took the bait of another fishing partner while playing it. WE landed it and took pictures of both lines coming out of its mouth.
Hey Jen, the upper half of that boot was there because it leaked at the knee and someone made a pair of rubber boots out of their waders. Not the first that has happened. They are great in a boat that way. Still keeps the toes dry.

The most unusual thing I've ever caught on hook and line was an actual steelhead.......scared me so bad I had to put it back in the river!.......hahhahah

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
one time while fishing in a pool filled with coho on the washougal a friend of mine was fishing spoons. he made a cast let it settle a bit then started his retrieve. About half way in my friend hooks a fish and a few minutes later we land a nice 10lb mint coho.
funny thing is the spoon was not hooked in the fish. the fidh had a leader hanging from it's lips at the end of the leader was a barrel swivel and through the eye of the swivel was the siwash hook on my friends spoon.. what are the odds????

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
How is this for bad luck? Once when I had first started steelheading I had felt a heavier thud at the end of my line and set the hook. That was well and good in front of my girlfriend in my boat and a nice summer day. Problem was it turned out to be a banana peel discarded from above. What are the odds?....and why did they eat bananas?
Just spreading bad luck around I guess!

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
Years ago, My son and I were fishing on the Wilson behind the A Frame on the upper river. Not a great day for fish. He yelled "Fish On" and the fight began. Well after quite some time, he got it up near the bank and I went down the edge, in the gravel and netted it. A beautiful Chinook over 30#. He took the net and I commenced to slide down the gravel into the water (that is another story). When I finally got up, he was sitting there wondering why his corkie was clear up his line and the hook was too. Well it turns out, that when he had cast, his weight hit the water and went down by the fish and got caught on a line that was protruding from the fishes mouth. Someone had lost the fish. Well when the fight had started, my son's weight line got jerked causing it to wrap around the other line. It wrapped so tight, that the fish was unable to get away. So when it was landed, he had never had his hook in it. Somehow we decided that it was still legal and it did taste "So Good".

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
1. A sand filled sock with a bunch of old line tangled around it. One end of the line had a 2 pound catfish though.
2. Lots of Octopi
3. One tree branch with 5 or 6 different spinners and spoons on it.
4. A shopping cart (Couldn't quite land that one though)
5. A sea-lion (He didn't even fight until he got to the surface.
6. A 27", 6 1/2# trout that never touched the hook (I was fishing with a bobber and he got tangled in the line ABOVE the bobber).

Re: OHMYGOSH! I caught a....???!!!
This ones kind of hard to believe. I was fishing in Lake Ontario out of Oswego NY off the nuclear power plant and we brought up a plastic garbage bag that said basically nuclear materials. the skipper of the charter just took it off and placed it in his garbage on the boat. I thought that was kind of scarry.
