Saw that on the news this morning, my hat is off to the Central Washington players.
Maybe MLB could take a few lessons from the college kids.

You're all nuts.
Can I say that?
It is a competitive sport. 2 runs and a ground rule single.
Try it in a male league and see who applauds.

Re: Great sportsmanship!!!
Besides Jack, it was a show of sportsmanship, not sport prowess. That is one of the things I've noticed over the years of living next to the baseball field of the high school.
The boys have a very expensive, well lit, fancy dugout, big bleachers, manicured infield, fenced field to play in. The girls have the back of the property backstop, no lights, no bleachers, just plain old field grass field to play on.
The big fancy bleachers have about a dozen people watching young men who drone on in inane field taunts and encouragement. Carrying on complete conversations that consist of almost entirely of 4 letter expletives, urinating on the fence to our property because it is too hard for those athletes to walk up to the bathroom.
Then for the girl's games there are easily over 100 people, mostly whole families with young children all the way to granparents, all cheering and clapping and encouraging. They play hard and competively and with all the sportsmanship you would expect.
Too bad the boys can't replicate some of that.

You know what STG......your right. I coach my daughters majors softball team (several years now) and help coach my sons Baseball team and I can tell you that is exactly how it goes. Baseball has high priority and probably always will. But we still have a great time, lead by example and play hard.
Everyone wants to win, but not that way. I know the young ladies on our team will see that and think it's cool that the college girls play like that so they will too. Those are the examples that make the most impact on kids these days and I for one think it's great. Teach good sportsmanship at a young age and see what happens?

It was a competitive tournament-type game. Not a knitting bee.
I wish I could make a guy-type guttural noise right here, but my gutteral noise-maker broke several years ago.

Rule clarification
As one of the umpires involved in the game between Central Washington and Western Oregon confirmed in an e-mail to ESPN.com, the rule in question was misinterpreted on the field after Tucholsky's injury and later clarified by the NCAA.
According to page 105, rule 8.5.3.2 of the NCAA softball rule book, "If an injury to a batter-runner or runner prevents her from proceeding to an awarded base, the ball is dead and the substitution can be made. The substitute must legally touch all awarded or missed bases not previously touched."

Re: Great sportsmanship!!!
It is a neat story and a good example. That said, Jack the grumpy one is right. It is a competitive sport injury or not. However, it is not the pros and it is not macho baseball. Interesting, there have been calls for the firing of the coach of that team since he may have urged his gals to carry her around the bases. Sometimes sports is not just black and white. Sportsmanship is so hard to find these days and this was a great example of that. I like the story. Most likely will be a movie sometime.
