Default New to turkey hunting.

Okay guys and girls. I am a rookie at turkey hunting never been before and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me some tips. Like possible areas to hunt that are close to where I live. I live in Forest Grove. I'm not asking for you to tell me your secret spot and I know that a lot of turkey hunting is getting out a studying where the turkeys roost and eat and mate. Only problem is I have no idea where to start looking. Thanks in advance for any help and advice you may give.

Matt

There used to be some turkeys up around Cherry Grove. Most were on private property. Other then that, you might have to travel to the known turkey areas south and east.

Good luck!

I sent you a PM on how and where to find birds on both private and public.

If you are going to use a shot gun, make sure and pattern it with Turkey loads and a turkey choke. Very important.

There are a lot more guys one here more qualified than I to give you advice on hunting them, but here are a few suggestion.
  1. Pattern your gun
  2. Use good camo and a turkey vest with pad if not hunting from a blind
  3. Get familiar with 1 or 2 calls to start with. The box and slate is good for starters. That's all I use at this point.
  4. Get a couple of videos that show turkey hunts and calling sequences. This helped me more than anything.
  5. Buy the best decoy that you can afford. The DSD is awesome and worked a lot better than the foam type.
  6. Practice moving slow and when you think you are moving slow enough, slow down a little bit
Good luck.

If anyone can send some PM's my way I'd also like to know, but I think I'm even more of a noob than fshnfool. I haven't a clue as to what gauge shotgun to get, where to start looking for turkeys, do I need to wear camo, have a blind set up, decoys, call, etc?

Thanks,
Jeremy

My suggestion to all the new to the sport turkey hunters, is to get a few turkey videos and watch and learn. They may always be successful, but you can still learn the basics. A book or 2 will help also.
