Lamiglas Plug Rod
I just bought one of Lamiglas's new hot shot rods. It is actually a graphite rod with a fiberglass tip. I tried it Monday on the Nestucca and it worked great. It throbbed just like my old Fenwick plug rods, and it got broke in with fish the first day out.

Re: Lamiglas Plug Rod
I'm not a big fan of that rod. I have the 1336-T, if that is the one you are talking about. I don't think that the tip is as sensitive as the old flame-tip that they made. I am currently looking for a better steelhead plug rod (without the astronomical price tag of a Loomis HSR 9000).

Re: Lamiglas Plug Rod
What am I missing here guys? I use any old rod for plugging, and they either bite it and swim away at a high rate of speed or they don't. I can see the need for enough sensitivity so that you can see if the plug is working, but beyond that what is the point of spending more? Please educate me.

Re: Lamiglas Plug Rod
I agree Thumper. If the tip is vibrating that's all I care about. I feel lucky, just picked up a Fenwick Hot Shot rod with the flame tip for $50 with reel from a friend. I'll take a Fenwick FS-83C for plugging anytime.

Re: Lamiglas Plug Rod
I have three old Fenwick plug rods. I don't know the model # but they are the yellow blanks. I think they are from the early 80's. They are great rods. The action on the lamiglas is the same as those but it has much more backbone for leveraging a bigger fish.
Thumper,
The reason a rod with a "slow action" tip is better for plugging is it gives the plug much better action. Having a fairly rigid tip kills some of the action of the plug. Having a nice soft tip allows the plug less resistance therefore more action.
As far as the model of Lamiglas. I do not know the model number. It is the graphite dark grey blank with the last 16 - 18" brown and a white tip.

Thumper,
You ask why a person would spend more money on plug rods? I ask you, how many reels do you own?

Re: Lamiglas Plug Rod
We have the HS 9000 (in fact I fished one today) GL4 quality blank (rainshadow) HS 9000 for $145
It is a great steelie rod.
I'll post a pic of a fish we caught today ASAP..
I really like the HS 9000 for factory fish

Re: Lamiglas Plug Rod
Since I take many folks who don't fish much I spend a lot of time plugging.
Having used many rods over the years and different lengths I purchased a Loomis 9000C from GI Joes. It's 7'6" and one piece. I was fortunate to get this rod brand new for 1/3rd the cost because the tip was broken off. I have to say this rod is out performing any other rod I have used to date which I have tried many. I like the fact it is one piece and has a very thin profile which this rod just vibrates like crazy when I'm pulling a plug. It's a thin rod but I have caught nookes on this unintentionally so it has the backbone to handle steelies.
Check out TH rods, I personally like to purchase a rod one time and a single piece, light tipped, 7'6" rod really does an excellent job for pulling plugs for steelies.
Now, if I could just get the feel for Jig fishing

Re: Lamiglas Plug Rod
Thumper,
I tend to agree with you. I can understand spending big bucks for a great drift rod, maybe float rod, even a all purpose spinning rod.....just never thought a plug rod was worth the money. I've tried using some of my wimpy graphite rods for pluging, never liked the feel/action. To this day I've never found a better plug rod then fiberglass. Of course I haven't tried a graphite rod made specificaly for pluging yet.
Currently I use Fenwick glass rods, FS 83C, under $100 each. An old favorite that I retired for no better reason then "I wanted a new rod" is a yellow fiberglass Eagle Claw. #PL 500, 8'2", 10 - 15 lb. line. I caught a lot of fish off that inexpensive Eagle Claw, less then $30. A past fishing buddy had a great plug rod, a 8' Kunnan, used to pick up those rods cheap years ago. Sure wished I had some of those rods, probably the best plug rod I've ever seen. Anyone have any Kunnan rods sitting around?

Re: Lamiglas Plug Rod
Spinnermaker, No I don't remember the model number. What I do remember was the great tip action, translates any little plug movement. I think the blank is graphite, dark brown in color. I'm guessing at the 8 foot lenght and pretty sure it's two piece.
I do remember they didn't sell well, think most people were skeptical of any rod costing $50 when they compared them to Lamiglass at $100 plus. How can any rod be worth buying unless it cost lots of money. We are just to brand name dependent.
Tell you what, if you had to choose between 4 rods and cost ranged at $30, $100, $180 and $270, what would you choose? Bet the $30 and $100 rods wouldn't even get much of a chance. I really wonder if the value between low end and high end is really worth that much more money.
Oh well, I still like my high end Lamiglass and Loomis rods.
