Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
I have not shot or owned either of these rifles so I have no preference.
Cost: I have seen the Savage Model 12FVSS on gunbroker for about $600, and the Tikka T3 Varmint for about $700.
Trigger: the trigger might (I don’t know) be better on the Savage. The Accu-Trigger is adjustable from 1 ½ -6 lbs and the Tikka is adjustable from 2-4 lbs.
Stock: The raised-comb cheek piece and fore-end look better on the Tikka.
Weight: Tikka – 6.6 lbs, Savage – 8.75 lbs
Barrel Length: Tikka – 23.38”, Savage – 26”
Questions: Would the extra length and weight of the Savage and the trigger make it more accurate than the Tikka – if so, how much of a difference? What do you all think is a better choice and why? General comments/opinions?

I had also looked at both of those guns myself and went with the
Remington 700 SPS .223 at Joes...$499.00 reg price - $30.00 on sale -another $30 for remington rebate...$439.00

Re: Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
My impression of current production accuracy is in this order. Savage, Browning, Tikka, Remington.
Of the two choices the Savage will probably turn in better accuracy.....but they are kinda butt ugly IMO. The Tikka is certainly more attractive...and heck aren't they budget Sako's???
What more can be said.
Lonnie, I'm curious what your Rem700 turns in for accuracy. I hope you got a good one. It's kinda a dice roll with them lately.
Have you shot it yet? Holler if you need help adj'ing that trigger down. Do it before you scope it & spend the time to sight it in.

Re: Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
I've considered hard the new Rem. VTR in 22-250. But personal distance preferances led me to a 257Weathby. Off thread I also put in an aftermarket Jewwel in my Rem mod.7 didn't 'slip in'.
If I bought a Rem 22-250 I'd look to a Jewell or Timney to make it spot accurat. Scopes; The Burris Tac-2s Illuminated are cute. I'd like the Burris 4.5-14X42 Posi-Loc Ill. but can't seem to locate that model? Ballistic recticle.

Re: Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
I have seen no mention of a ruger m77 on this thread. My cousin shoots a m77 in 22-250. It is a target/varmint model and it is extremely accurate with the right handloads. It is not uncommon to hole the second or third shot at 200 yds.
I also would not put as much consideration into the weight. In my experience varmint hunting is not a lot of walking and packing a gun up and down mountain sides. It is much more sitting and shooting from a prone position.

I don't know anything about CZ, but I have tried to reseach them some and I have not been able to determine if they make any rifles in matierial other than blued steel. All the CZ's that I have seen pictures of show blued guns (including their website). I am too picky to own anymore blued steel guns.
Regarding Remington; I have read too many stories recently about inconsistent results (ie: accuracy) from factory rifles. I have learned that they are a good platform to "start" with, but I don't want to spend alot of money building a quality rifle. Tikka has an accuracy gaurantee and Savage has built a very good accuracy reputation. These comments are not based on personal experiences, only based on recent research - lots of reading on the intenet - trying to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Re: Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
Don't over look the Ruger 77. I got one in 22-250 in the heavy barrel varmiter.
If I do my part it will put 5 shots inside a 3/8 circle at 100 Yds. With the right person shooting it does even better.

Re: Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
If the smaller CZ calibers tell anything about their larger ones the22-250 would be great. My buddy just picked up a CZ in 22mag. The action was nice(a hair stiff but it will work out) fit and finish is better than Remington and Savage. Shoot clover leafs at 50 yards and fair at 100.
I know you are looking for a Tikka or Savage 22-250 but pick up and play with a CZ before you buy.

Re: Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
I have a Savage Model 12 varminter in a 22-250. I put a leupold 4x12 on it...absolutely SMOKIN' HOT!!
The accu-trigger is awesome...as we know. The accuracy is outstanding. I put 39 grains of H380 in the case and top it with a speer 55 grain soft point and have excellent accuracy. I tried several different flavors of powder configurations and this is the one that shot the best. You cannot complain when you line up on a prairie dog at 200+ yards and it flies 5 feet in the air upon impact. It is more accurate than I am.
I am sure the tikka is a fine rifle...i just don't have any experience with them.

Re: Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
I've got a Savage 12FV in .204 Ruger that's just scary accurate. A friend of mine had a Tikka varmint in .223 I shot several times and that was similarly accurate. I could outshoot him with my Savage, but only by a tiny bit. Triggers are comparable once adjusted down. The longer barrel will not make it more accurate, but may give a little more velocity.
Myself, I'd choose the Savage. I have 3 Savage rifles and they're all very accurate, plus the barrel can be changed very easily on the Savage if you ever want to replace or change to a different cartridge. I also prefer the blind magazine instead of the Tikka's detachable one. I don't know why folks think Savage guns are ugly - maybe it's the barrel nut - but I thought the Tikka with the rubber stock inserts was ugly. Just my personal preference, YMMV. Mostly I like the Savage because I've had such great luck with them.

If you have been watching trends in bench rest shooting, long barrels are out. Althought it flies in the face of what people have thought for years, they are getting better accuracy with shorter barrels. Theory is that it is something to do with the bullet stabilizing quicker.

Re: Which 22-250 --> Tikka Varmint vs. Savage 12 Varmint
I have two Tikkas would absolutely buy another.
I would also buy a Savage with Accutrigger.
If I was shooting from the bench, Savage due to weight.
If I was shooting varmints and moving, Tikka due to weight.
Curious, what's the diff in twist rates?
I have 2 CZ's, both rimfire and both amazing.
I agree, and question why they don't have choices in stainless or some kind of weatherproof finish...I love CZ's.
Resale value goes to the Tikka.

My brother, "Steve the Nailer", just purchased the .204, .233 & .22-250 in the Remington SPS.....ALL of them are 1 ragged hole accurate at 100yds!
If I were to sell my Kimber of Oregon, that would be my #1 choice.

I shoot a CZ in 22-250. Far and away my favorite (best shooting) rifle that I own.
Now that you mention it, I dont think I've ever seen one in stainless though.

My Remington is an honest tack driver...as said 'ragged hole' producer. It's a Model 700 BDL VLS in .22-250 with Speer/IMR hand loads. I bought it new around 13 years ago, broke the barrel in and have taken good care of it. I can't speak for new Remingtons but the older ones seem to work well.

Longe barrel will give you more velocity and heavier gun will have less recoil, IO have heard good things about the accu trigger
