I thought that you always had to claim a "party Leader" in order for people to put in with that person This is why I would always give my hunter number/ID to my friends before they went to put in...

Re: 18 days to application deadline
on page 33 of the 2008 Oregon Big Game Regulations is the 2008 Mail Order Application; on that page is a line in blue (which indicates something is new for the year) which states:
" You must indicate if you are an individual, party member or party leader by checking the appropriate box".
Then for each species is a set of 3 blue checkboxes (INDIVIDUAL,PARTY MEMBER,PARTY LEADER)
Edit: In addition, on page 11 under the title PARTY APPLICATIONS, it states:
New: You must indicate if you are applying as an individual, party member or party leader when applying for your controlled hunts.

You always had to claim but anyone could be a party leader without designation, now the party leader has to be designated on his/her app when they apply or the system will not let anyone else be a member of that party

Re: 18 days to application deadline
I had that problem this year as well. My dad who lives in Bend went to the ODFW office to apply and they told him that he couldn't because I wasn't designated the "party leader". He faxed me the change sheet which I filled out and faxed into the main office. They made the appropriate changes and it was a done deal. It's a inconvenience but do it early rather than late otherwise you and your party will be S.O.L. If in doubt call them and have them look you up in the computer to be sure.

Re: 18 days to application deadline
'Got it. 'Compared 2007 regs and 2008 regs. Basically, a slight change in wording and what will likely clarify things for ODFW re those making mail-order application. Thanks. I always get mine done early @ the *** and I am generally the party leader so I go in first and the others follow with my lic #. Don

Re: 18 days to application deadline
Don make sure you are a party leader tho because if they checked no as you being in a party and the leader. All your buddies wont be able to apply with you. Even if they have your lic number.
Question: DO they still require point savers. I thought i head somewhere now that all points will be saved with this new system. And that you just wont accumilate any more points unless you put in for one. If thats the case looks like i just saved $9 or so. If not its time to get in before the lines start forming

Page 12 of the regs:
Starting in 2008, hunters will not forfeit
their preference points if they do not
apply for a hunt series for two or more
consecutive years. Preference points
remain in the system until they are redeemed.
Page 11:
New: You must indicate if you are applying
as an individual, party member or party
leader when applying for your controlled hunts.

Re: 18 days to application deadline
when i did mine i just did it like normal, expecting it to work like it has since the draw started. there is only one tag it will mess up, the 5 points we have for the 600 series. i'm hoping we do not get drawn. now that we are seperate in the draw. if only one of us gets drawn we will not buy the tag. just lose the points.

Re: 18 days to application deadline
I believe you can correct that problem Baltz, I thought I saw a poster talking about making after the fact changes. Might want to give the local department a call.
I should have said something the other day, I saw this when I applied and thought some people would get tripped up.

Re: 18 days to application deadline
Yes you have until June 1st to make changes to an application:
Page 11 of the regs:
If there is an error on your controlled hunt
application (incorrect party leader’s license
number, hunt choice, etc.), or if you need
to change your application, you must
contact the Controlled Hunt staff by
June 1 to have it corrected. Mail a
photocopy of your application with the
corrections marked to ODFW-Controlled
Hunts, 3406 Cherry Ave. NE, Salem, OR 97303, or fax to 503-947-6113 or 6117.

Re: 18 days to application deadline
Thanks for the heads-up on this guys. Just got the bad news from Utah, so was working on the email to send out to my group with party leader etc. I will pass on this info to make sure we don't screw it up.
Baltz, call the Salem headquarters and ask for the Controlled Hunt dept. Can't remember her name, but she is great at getting these things fixed. You will likely have to still do it in writing, but she can walk you through the process.

Re: 18 days to application deadline
yes i could get it changed, i think i'll just not buy the tag if drawn. it being a doe tag in a coast unit. last time we drew a doe tag in the coast units, we came back with 2 general season bucks and zero doe. the doe tag gives me and the wife new places to explore. and i get to shoot a couple limits of grouse.

Man, I need to read up on the regs again. I thought you lost points once you drew a tag (if you purchase it or not)??? Do you only lose points if you purchase a tag that you drew?
Thanks,
DC

Re: 12 days to application deadline
Baltz - why not just send in a fax and change your 600s to a point saver? If you draw that tag, your 600 points will go back to zero (regs, page 12, left column, about half way down). Why waste five years applying in a series? Even if you believe you won't hunt in the 600 series again, some new hunt may come along that interests you.
I posted a picture of a great (on my scale) white tail buck I took in a 600 series hunt a while back. Who knows what they will add next year, or in 4 years.

Re: 12 days to application deadline
checking my odds on the draw i see we have 4 points, not 5. and a 79% chance if tag numbers are the same. we apply for 600 series for my wife to hunt, it is so long between hunts she has lost intrest, and told me after the week long rain hunt for general buck last year that she has no desire to go anymore. so if we get drawn, we save a doe or two to breed another year.

Re: 10 days to application deadline
I'm mailing or faxing mine in. I tried to get them from Fred Meyers the night I left Oregon and their system was already closed down for the night.
I grabbed regulations and "tonights the night". Mostly point saving since I am saving dollars to pay for a guided Weneha elk hunt.

Re: 4 days to application deadline
took care of mine on thursday. No line at bimart.
this week it will be crazy
Going for the late season white river tag for buck, maybe i'll get lucky. Its a new hunt they only give out 10 tags for. coast cow and W. santiam doe are my other 2 choices. If i get any of them it will be in the 25% pool.
I drew a silvies buck tag one year without any points, so good things can happen.

Re: 4 days to application deadline
I'm done.
will get my antelope tag and burned 6 deer points so I can take my 14 year old daughter hunting.
Might get Ochoco Elk as second choice.
Going to be close to 100% on your Elk hunt. That unit is getting more press all the time though. More of the high point guys jumping over lately.

Re: 4 days to application deadline
Because of school and a few other things I decided to just put in for all point savers for buck deer, anterless deer, elk, and antelope and will just purchase general tags to get in quick hunts around here

I thought about just buying points for elk and doe tags, but figured there is that small chance i could get drawn in the 25% pool. I'll do the over the counter coast elk tag so i can scout some areas for when i draw my cow tag here in the next year or 2.

Re: 4 days to application deadline
Controlled hunt deadline extended through Monday, May 19
Date:
May 14, 2008
Contact:
Michelle Dennehy (503) 947-6022 / (503) 931-2748
Fax: (503) 947-6009
SALEM, Ore.-The controlled hunt deadline has been extended through close-of-business Monday, May 19 due to a slowdown in ODFW’s point-of-sale system created by the high-volume of sales activity and system data communication capacity. ODFW and the system supplier are working on solutions.
“We understand lines have been long in some places and want to make sure everyone has a chance to apply for a big game hunt,” said ODFW License Services Manager DeAnna Erickson.
Hunters can apply for a controlled hunt in a variety of ways: visit an ODFW office or a point-of-sale agent; mail an application found on page 33 of the Big Game Regulations to ODFW Licensing, 3406 Cherry Ave. NE, Salem, OR 97303 (must be postmarked by May 19); or fax an application to 503 947-6117/6113 (must be received by 11:59 p.m. PT May 19).
Hunters are reminded to check store and office hours of ODFW license agents. Even stores open 24 hours may not have staff available to do license sales at all hours. Stores have also been known to stop accepting customers because of long lines on deadline day.
Hunters are also reminded that June 1 is the deadline to make any changes or corrections to a controlled hunt application. Call ODFW’s licensing division at (503) 947-6101 to make a change.
### More about controlled hunt applications
ODFW limits the number of hunters for particular big game hunts (some deer and elk hunts, all pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, Rocky Mtn goat hunts) for game management and to enhance the hunting experience. Hunters must apply for tags for these "controlled" hunts in the spring. A random computer drawing occurs in June.
Specific 2008 controlled hunt proposals are available online. In general, elk tag numbers will be proposed to be similar to last year while mule deer and pronghorn tag proposals will be down slightly due to poor fawn recruitment
Below is a list of controlled hunt application mistakes commonly made by hunters: - Getting personal information wrong. Double-check your name, birth date, phone number, address, and Hunter/Angler I.D. number.
- Choosing the wrong hunt. Hunt numbers can change. Double-check your hunt number with current regulations so there is no risk of losing hard-won preference points. Don’t rely on store clerks or hunting buddies for this information.
- Not including correct daytime tel. information. ODFW needs your current phone number so we can get in touch if there is a problem.
- Getting party details wrong. ODFW’s new *** system should make party applications easier because once one member applies, the system can access that information as other party members apply. Be careful not to exceed party size on your application—for example, for pronghorn antelope hunts the maximum party size is two.
- Faxing in multiple applications. Not only does this confuse ODFW staff but your credit card could be charged multiple times, which takes time to correct. Avoid the last minute and you won’t face a busy fax machine that doesn’t provide a confirmation.
- Writing illegibly. Mail order applicants need to write neatly and legibly to ensure their applications are processed correctly.
- Waiting until the last minute to apply at *** locations. While ODFW’s point-of-sale system no longer shuts down at 11 p.m., many stores close well before that hour. Even stores open 24 hours may not have staff available to do license sales at odd hours.Stores have also been known to stop accepting customers because of long lines on deadline day. Get your application in well before the deadline to avoid this problem.
For more information on controlled hunt applications, contact ODFW’s licensing division at (503) 947-6101.

Re: ? days to application deadline extended to the 19th
criminal is what i call extending the deadline, just make new rules to sell more applications. IF you wait till the last minute, expect to be unable to get in the draw. just more of the same. this type of stuff happens so often we are all used to the malfunctions

A complete system outage would be one thing; but an overall slowdown due to last-minute volume is quite another. I don't agree with the choice the agency made here.

Re: ? days to application deadline extended to the 19th
The system slowed down so much they had to extend the deadline beacause of the volume of applicants? Imagine that! That NEVER happens

Re: ? days to application deadline extended to the 19th
I feel bad for the people at bimart, joes, sportsmans etc. A lot of people who go and apply for tags have no clue what they are going to apply for or what info they need before they get in line. I had the guy in front of me at bimart ask the lady for a "buck tag somewhere near dufur please" He was SHOCKED to find out that he had to apply for it.

More complaining, big shocker! We should change from IFish to I (B-word).
Is extending the deadline going to lead to a significant change in number of applications? I doubt it.
Who cares that they extended it.

Re: ? days to application deadline extended to the 19th
here is how i look at it. i start a job at an agreed upon price, of $1000 then on completion i give you a bill for $1100 and then tell you, what is your problem it's only 10% of unethical billing. why are you complaining. if the system is not working, fix it.

Re: ? days to application deadline extended to the 19th
Date is a date. My wife and I, and the rest of my party, managed to get all of ours in without a hassle, and all by the 10th.
If the system itself was still working, tough. Shoulda got in ahead of time.

Re: ? days to application deadline extended to the 19th
Oh, I agree the system NEEDS to be fixed…sad really. Why it’s not an online system or at least the option to do all applications online from my own PC is pathetic in this day and age. I can buy just about anything over the Internet, but can't apply for a hunt??? How much money has ODFW spent on “upgrades” to this *** system? I don’t want to know.
But my point is hunters should not be punished due to the squirrel getting tired.

The legislature mandated that online license sales be made available. To do this ODFW had to get a new system since the previous one would not allow online sales and the vendor was no longer servicing the units. From what I was told at a town hall meeting, this new system will be able to do online licensing once the bugs are worked out. Remember this is the first controlled hunt drawing for the system.
