Default Chick

Fished Chickahominy Saturday afternoon for about three hours. Spur of the moment trip... leave Bend at 1:30 in the afternoon. Drive 100 miles one way to fish for three hours…. first tug on the fly rod since last October. It was good.

Thanks for the report. I need to get over there once this Spring.

How good was the fishing?

What were the fish taking?

Any photos?

No photos Andy. We fished for two hours with only one fish between us then hooked seven in half an hour on a size 14 bright green chronimid with a white bead. I threw a bugger on a clear camo line for quite a while without a bump.

The guys we talked to at the boat ramp said it was slow for them but from what I saw the fly fishers and trollers were hooking up but the bait fishers not so much.

The water level is low, the water temp was 46 degrees in the main lake and 52 on the N.W. end. We caught fish in 2' to 5' of water mainly close to the shore. Visability is poor. The fish we caught fought well and were the standard Chic footballs.

Anyone with information on where and how to fish Chick would be greatly appriciated. I will be giving it a try Wed. PM after work.

I was looking for what type of line, fly, and where. This will be my first time.

Thanks, Gustav

Gustav the only hits we had were on midge pupa fished under an indicator with a floating line. We found fish close to the shore in 2’ to 5’ of water. Traditionally leech patterns on an intermediate line are a good bet. Sometimes a prince nymph on a long leader/floating line just cast out (no retrieve, just take up the slack) works well. With this technique you have to be very attentive as the takes can be light.

From my experience the fish tend to cruse the shoreline. If I stop somewhere and am not bit in three or four casts I’ll move till I find em. If you do get some hits and then it slows down relocate a short distance (50/100 yards away and you may get into them again. The bays and fingers are typically where I look for fish.

The wind can be an issue at Chick. Wednesday evening calls for breezy conditions in Burns… the wind could be really cranking out on chick.

Will you be fishing out of a motor boat, tubing or wading?

Have fun, John

Thanks for the report, John. I've only fished Chick a couple of times as stops on my way to the Malheur. I miss those "Eastern" Oregon waters.

Now, about that bass lake?

Phil my buddy drove up to Davis yesterday to check it out. He was able to get right to the boat ramp at the East campground. Unfortunatly the north end of the lake is still iced over. The lava flow entrance still had 2' +
of snow on the ground. Still have a seat reserved for you.

John,

Thank you for the information on Chick. I will be fishing Wed. PM after work, probably after 5 sometime.

I won't have much time so I was planning on just fishing from shore. Is this possible? What is the bank like? I have seen some of these E. Oregon lakes and the banks are a thick clay that you sink down in; I was hoping it is not that stuff.

I've driven by Chick several times, but never stopped. Is it obvious where to fish?

Thanks, Gustav
