Default Anyone know what kind of fish this is?

We were walking on the beach today and came upon seagulls picking at this and I'm just wondering if anyone knows what this is?

Can't argue with that.

Actually, it's one of two species of Lancetfish, per another ID request recently:

Anyone have any idea why so many of these have washed up on the beach lately?

These wash up every year, usually about this time. Not a bunch of them, but a handful are always reported in the spring.

I saw one of those on the beach at Florence two years ago....it was about 4ft long.
Never did find out what the name of it was.

If that thing suck down my clone - someone else can get it out - I'm going to drive the boat while someone else deals with the sewing machine fish
