I want to see pics of rigging whole herring. I've read several posts about how to do it but pics would really help out.

Okay, this is how Grandpa Cooper showed me back in the early 70s. Take the lead hook up under the jaw and out the nostril. Then through the eye socket twice( go right above the eyes to leave them there.) Place the trailing hook near the tail and the lead hook in the shoulder.

A fast way to get a line in the water when the "bite is on" will be to run leading hook beween mouth and eye. Then just place point behind eye allowing it to stick out a little. Leave the trailing hook to swim freely as a stinger.

Wow. Thats an interesting way of doing it. The only way in my oppinion to get a roll worthy of fishing on a whole herring is with sliding hooks and remember to make sure to use dacron line to tie the top hook. Just my .02

There are new nose clips at Fishermans Marine and GI Joes that clip right on, have a fin on the side to make it role correctly and a trailer hook--all in one. I will never rig another herring any other way...

hmmmmm.....Boat Monkey - I tried to use those last year and immediately the fin would break off and I found the clip to be very hard to spring open enough to get a nose inside. It always took two hands and a helper to put the fish in! I thought it looked like an idiot proof way to use herring, but they apparently didn't see me coming

Thanks, Slabmaster for the great pics!

That was a pretty good link but......if you follow the instructions on the cut plugged herring after a short while of trolling you will notice that the longer side of the herring will start to fold over, to avoid this and make your bait fish twice as long, do not tilt the knife blade. If you keep the blade straight up and down and cut your angle your bait will last longer, and fish better. You can increase or decrease the rate of spin by increasing, or decreasing the angle of your cut, not the blade. Also leave your back hook trailing just enough to clear the tail. Try it and see, your hook will stay in one place while the bait swims around it. As long as the back hook is SHARP you will keep more hook ups.

I use the roto-killers out in the ocean all the time. i just put my needle nose pliers in there and open the pliers. The jaws will hold that sucker tight. Once you open the jaws a couple times they lossen up a little. I use quick-tight on the fin and have had fewer break off.

With a whole herring you can run a wire above the top hook like you would with a prawn. Insert the wire through the herrings head and down the body then rig your hooks into the herring however you want. With the wire inside you can bend the herring to give you what ever roll you want.
