Assuming you uninstalled all of the Java versions before you installed the latest, it sounds like your browser security settings are stopping you. If it is Internet Explorer, in Tools-Options-Security, there are a few options for ActiveXs. You can either temporarily reduce the security level and then set it back after you get into chat, or change just the ActiveX settings to Prompt.

I keep seeing all these posts about 'can't do this and can't do that online', and I keep thinking about how screwed up the internet is.

Only in this medium is it expected and accepted that some jacka$$ will try to dump garbage on you pc, and most of us just suffer with it. The most popular tools for using the internet have ridiculously dorky child safety systems, that many people don't have a clue how to work around. Anyway.. I'm on the border of a rant here......

I'm a big fan of firefox for general internet browsing, but I have to use IE for hotmail, maps.live.com etc.. MSN stuff just doesn't play well with firefox. Hmm the Gates' evil empire at work???

try mozilla.org

Firefox is the browser only version of Mozilla. Mozilla has an email client and other stuff that you either may or may not need.

Try Firefox, though. It works.

See PM...

My install of firefox entered the chatroom, and I haven't been in one since I reinstalled my OS.

Good Luck!
