Costco Chicken Jerky for dogs
My dogs both love this stuff and we go through quite a bit of it.
(I spoil my dogs!)
Anyhow... if you read on the internet, there is a ton of garbage about how these treats can make your dogs sick if they are from China.
You never know if what you read on the internet is true or not, and some things get so blown out of whack.
What is your experience? My dogs have never been sick from this, to my knowledge.
Rev has kind of a delicate system, too. She gets sick quite often and easy if you don't feed her all lamb... but she does OK on the chicken jerky so far.
Any experience with this, out there?

I feed them to my Husky.
I think the ones I get are made in Arkansas though.

Re: Costco Chicken Jerky for dogs
My wife gives our American Eskimo a choich chicken or beef. She takes the chicken jerky first then comes back after the beef. No problems with her.

It appears to be true. Here is what snopes has to say: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/dogtreat.asp

Re: Costco Chicken Jerky for dogs
One dog has a very sensitive stomach so she gets her food and one variety of Iams treats. The other dog will eat anything and inhales the chicken jerky with minimal chewing, which bothers me so she doesn't get them either.

Re: Costco Chicken Jerky for dogs
Thanks for the info. It may not apply to cat treats but I'm not taking a chance. I just checked all my cats treats for the place of origin,, thankfully they all say in fine print "Made in USA".
Now I have to give her something so she will quit yelling at me.

Re: Costco Chicken Jerky for dogs
The above link isn't about Costco jerky, though. Here's a letter from the Costco reps from this page. It's a bit more detailed.
Quote:
Dear Diane,
Thank you for your email to Costco Wholesale.
Wal-Mart has announced today that during July they have pulled some of their Chicken Jerky Pet Treats due to a possible microbial illness (salmonella) that a dog contacted.
We do not buy from the vendor (Pingyang Pet or Shanghai Bestro) that supplies the pet treats that are involved with this issue at Wal Mart. There has not been a recall announced by Wal Mart.
The Chicken Jerky Pet Treats sold at Costco (all regions) are made from whole muscle chicken breast meat and are processed just as beef jerky is for humans. We also have our Chicken Jerky Pet Treats irradiated prior to shipping to eliminate bacteria and insure that we do not have any microbial issues.
We also treat all of our pork based treats (pig ears, rolls, ect) with irradiation and have been for the last 8 years.
Thank you,
Sue

I use the chicken jerky as treats for my 3 dogs, as everyone else said they love it. The only problem I have is there is a lot of sodium used in the processing which is not good for the dogs, so I limit the amount they consume. Other than that it is a great treat.

Re: Costco Chicken Jerky for dogs
This is the most comprehensive list of all foods that were recalled during the big scare in 2007.
http://www.howl911.com/petfoodrecall_list.htm
If a company is on that list, I will not buy their products regardless of whether or not they have cleaned up their act. It means I spend more on food, but it is worth every penny for my "fur kids".
The pet shop that I go to did carry any of the recalled items and makes sure to keep up to date.

Re: Costco Chicken Jerky for dogs
Well this is interesting.
The Snopes article that ORinker cites is especially compelling. The Cornell study points out that the greatest risk is to small dogs, and the symptoms are kidney failure, which can mimic diabetes (constant drinking and urination).
We lost Sooz's 16-yr.-old dog last week. She was quite small (about 8 pounds), had classic symptoms of dog diabetes. She gradually lost weight, became progressively more lethargic and weak, and we had her put down when she could no longer walk. One difference is that she was a dirt eater, which made me think that maybe she was also deficient in iron.
What's interesting is that her favorite treat was the COSTCO Chinese-made chicken strips.
Also note that the primary cause of death from Chinese-origin melamine-tainted dog food is kidney failure, with virtually the same symptoms as above. The Cornell study didn't identify the offending agent in the Snopes article, but I wonder is melamine could be at fault here too.
Those of you with larger dogs don't seem to have a problem. But those with small dogs should be very careful. I am not feeding any Chinese-made treats to our remaining dog, the Jack Russell, who is probably too mean to die anyways.

Re: Costco Chicken Jerky for dogs
My Chesapeake..Eider has been getting these treats for most of his 5 years. I didn't read the label about point of origin..bad on me. I don't trust anything from china. He's never been sick but drinks an enormous amount of water . Good thing huh . No more chinese treats for him .I'll share a hamms with him instead.
