How was customs with your firearms?

You don't. You feed hungy villages. All hides & skulls must be "dipped" to prevent bringing in "bugs". I can't speak for Old Soldier's outfit but mine will have the chef prepare you a meal of tenderloin or backstrap if you want.

I hunted with Barry in '95, and have arranged several hunt donations in the years since, including the one to Capitol Chapter that Old Soldier bought at auction at last years banquet.
Barry has also generously donated the same hunt for the OHA state convention next month.
You won't regret hunting with Nitro Safaris

Re: Out of Africa (End of Hunt)
There is a good list of items needed for an African hunt on the Nitro Website. I wore Danner Pronghorn boots.
On customs be sure and get the form from US customs for your rifle before you go. I went to Canada on a moose hunt last Setember and had the form already. The paperwork in Johnasburg took a little while but no problem. There was a guy there that had paid someone to do his paperwork and he was still in the police office when we left. Just do your own. Before you go check the South African website as things change.
Also you have to pay to get your gun out of SA. I think it was 50 Euro. I put it on my credit card they would not take cash. Where we were there was not problems with bugs. Also took a five day 4X4 trip with tents to the Kalahari. No bugs only four bad snakes no danger. 25 lions and hundereds of other animals.
If anyone has any other questions please PM me or make a post I will do my best to answer. Woluld be glad to answer them. Also good change Barry owner of Nitro (PH) will be in Oregon in May if so I and neighbor will have a house party and those that want to come by and talk let me know. Date of visit are not firm yet I will make a post when and if they are.
By the way the hunt was a part donation to Capitol Chapter OHA's banquet last year so money went into Oregon wildlife and we have a committement for a donation for March 2009 plan on bidding on that. Salem CCA will have a hunt at their May 31st banquet. Barry and I set that up while I was in Africa.
The meat is great we had several kinds while there and it was all good.

Re: Out of Africa (End of Hunt)
There is almost no hunting in South Africa that is not fenced. However, it is fair chase. The animals can escape the hunter and all the other things that in my mind makes it fair chase. You can hunt for hours and never see a fence. I think there was about 50,000 acres on the farm if my memory is correct. I think Barry or Phillip (the PH I hunted most with) one said that 90% of SA is private and I think most if not all farms that run hunting operations are fenced. The method I prefered was to spot and then stalk. Same method I used in Namibia in 1990 the stalks are not always successful. My hunting partner found that out on Kudu and finally was successful the second day he was after a Kudu.

Re: Out of Africa (End of Hunt)
That black wildebeast is great. Congrats!
I've hunted SA, we hunted both national parks and a fenced ranch. The ranch was 80,000 acres, which by my calculation is over 100 square miles. There are some canned hunts in SA, but many of the ranches are many times larger than the areas we hunt in Oregon, meaning it really is fair chase.

Re: Out of Africa (End of Hunt)
bo4elk
Did you hunt with a bow or rifle. Nitro is set up with blinds for bow hunters as well as they can accomdate disabled. They have asked me to contact the Disable Vet Organization here in Oregon about a hunt for them. Which I will do today. I read the SA Professioanl Hunters Magizine while there and they have taken a strong stand against canned hunts and had a good definition of what a canned hunt is. I was going to write it down and then forgot.

Re: Out of Africa (End of Hunt)
I rilfe hunted. They had bow blinds available, but being my first trip I wanted to hunt afoot and get a little more of the country in. I hunted just south of namibia. I'm hoping to go back once I get my kids through college.
