Default Mandatory ODFW bear check in...

Checked my skull in Monday. It was pretty painless. Surrounded by a bunch of appreciative young staff seeking to be informed and asking rapid fire how to questions of the old bear hunter...lol!. Got away with a half dozen pair of nitrile gloves. I can always use those. A fun time was had by all...

What do they hope to learn from the check in? If you want to do a rug with head and dont know how to skin the head (dont want to screw up the eyes or lips) what do you do about the check in?

King Slew-

where did you check in at? Charleston or did you go all the way to Roseburg?

We took one of our clients in last week and it was only the second bear in Roseburg turned it. Did they estimate the age of your bear? I know they are guessing at this point, but they estimated ours at 22 years (which I thought was about 10 years too high in my guestimate).

The process took us an hour and a half, but that might have been due to all the BS'ing that was going on...lol Our other client check his in in Portland area somewhere and didn't ask what "number" he was.

They take a measurement of a pre molar tooth. Take the tooth and do a cross section to determine age and check for tetracycline staining.

You have 10 days to get to check in. Your taxidermist can cape the head for you if you don't feel up to doing it yourself. It's just like cougar.

I checked mine at the South Beach office in Newport. I'm pretty sure that you can go to any field office as long as there's a biologist there. I was the second to check in of only two so far. The guys around here are sticking pretty close to home since gas costs more than beer...lol! Judging by teeth wear, my boar was about six or so.

How big do you figure he was? Looks like a fairly large bear compared to most of the Boo Boo's I see around here.

Joe, he was just an average springer. Five footer. About 200# live weight. Dressed 143# at the butcher. 17" skull. He'd be a lot heavier in the fall, only about 3/4" of fat on his rump.

The pic below is of a good spring bear I took in '06. He was pretty big. Six and a half feet, 19 1/2" skull. Two of us couldn't lift him with the guts out. Had to winch him into the pickup bed with a come-a-long and a plank. He went 368# at the butcher minus guts, feet, head and hide. That's pretty big for a springer. A week later, a friend of mine killed a seven footer with a 20 3/4" skull in the same area. Some good genes there.

I saw one, Sunday before last, that was prolly 350#-400#.
