Default Impact Poll

This is a stab at estimating economic impact for recreational fishing. This question is raised at Marine reserve meetings and no one has an answer. We all know it is alot but no proof is ever offered. WE could let them shut down the coast or we can go to the meetings with numbers in hand. Yeah, I know this is not a scientific study but it is a rough guess and better than arm waving at the meeting.

You don't have to admit how much you spend with your name attached so that will keep you out of the doghouse at home. Any boat owner/operators that fish in the ocean .. I would appreciate a few minutes of your time.

Think carefully and add up all your boat related expenses for the year and average that into a monthly amount. This includes boat payment, storage, insurance, mooring, fuel, other operating costs, repairs, toys and towing it. Divide this into

1) Spent at the coast

and

2) All else

For now I'll poll you on the average monthly you spend on operating your boat. If you are a rider then wait for the next poll. We'll get to the breakdown of valley vs coast later.

Thanking you in advance.

Do I include the cost of the interior/top/engine/fuel system/wiring/gauges/accessory/fish storage refurb I am in the process of?

Or just the cost of towing and using it when finished?

I'm not as big of a spender as most. (Old boat is paid for) I'm not there alot in the winter. I would average it out about $300 a month spent in Newport, and $450 a month total. Thats probably a very conservative esimate but I think I might break down if I realize how much I really spend.

***EDITED at 10:10PM**
First and foremost:

Is my significant other gonna see this poll?

Ok, ok. Well my boats are all paid for. But with gas, insurance, maintenance, electronic and mechanical upgrades I think I spend just a little over $500/month****...

The bulk of that is at the coast. I purposely shifted my boat and trailer service to Tillamook and Garibaldi to help support their economy. Same goes for the truck that tows the boats.

****Edit**** I just happened to have my '06 and '07 books laid out for some ridiculous IRS thing, so I at least had some fun tonight

'06 - $624.56 per month (Approx $570 at the coast)
'07 - $640.34 per month (Approx $600 at the coast)

'08 - will be higher - I have already replaced my steering, regeared for TUNA and Halibut and now carry 47 gals of gas

I waited until she went to bed to do this...

I agree, hope the wife doesn't for some odd reason see this....

My Arima is paid off so just fuel and maint. is all I pay for.......Right now I would say just about $500 a month to fish....

Another 650 in payment and insurance.
200 more getting back and forth to the coast.
Ouch I just figured out where all my money goes each summer.

$420/month at the coast, including the boat payment which is at a coastal bank.

An additional $50/month away from the coast, mainly for tackle

Close to 1500 per month when gas, storage, toys, and repairs to boat, motor and trailer are included. Fortunately a good portion of this is offset for me personally by crew contributions for gas.

Another 100 or so a month for tackle that isn't bought at the coast.

Another couple of hundred for lodging, groceries, and meals at the coast for multiple day trips.

And plus an average of about a 100 a month for diesel and truck maintainence and that will be going up this year as diesel has increased significantly in price. probably the amount at the coast will go up significantly also because of the increased cost of gas for the boat.

While doing some research a while back on the economic impact of the sport fishing industry vs. the commercial fishing industry I came across estimates for what you're looking for. It's been a while but I think the NSIA was the source. Their website doesn't have a search feature but there is a number for their main office.Might be worth a try.

I don't even own a salty boat and conservatively I spend $10k a year on my fishing habit. I'd say, easily, more than half of that is spent on salty pursuits. That may start to change though......

Don’t have to worry the wife finds out she’s half of the problem. The family spends more money just doing things at the coast while I fish. Not including the house we have there and the taxes we pay Depoe Bay $1500.00 $2000.00 does this include what we gamble at the casino o god I need to stay home I could retire early but cant catch fish at home thanks Pilar now have really lost it and I still haven’t caught a TUNA yet ……..

OK, Forgot about Breakfast at Shirley's, Trips to Harry's and Englunds and moorage for the boat in Newport. Add another $400 Average for that. Then there is the Swap Meet this weekend. $1300 a month with $600 going to the coast Economy.

And no tuna in Oregon yet.

Spent at the coast 12 month average – $750
I try to support the local economy and buy all my tackle and food in Newport
The average trip would also include
Boat gas from the gas dock
Bait, ice, and misc purchases from South Beach store
Rogue beers
South Beach camping
Moorage
Trailer storage at Newport RV

One more item is what the crew spends. Typical trip will bring 3 crew members into South Beach to fish with me for a couple of days. Not sure what they spend per trip

All else 12 month average - $3000
The boat is paid for but this year included 21K for new motor and rigging and 6K in transom repairs
Insurance
Diesel for the pickup and camper
Misc repairs and upgrades on the boat
Misc tackle not available in Newport
Boat and trailer license

Stunning, Eh?

The OPB guys have it figured out IMHO. Boat ownership is expensive. Why own a boat when you can just ride with someone else? It was not my intention to bum anyone out. My point is this. We are spending money and supporting the local economy. Whether that is near where you live or as some of you say at the beach to support those towns.

How do you think this money spent will change when we are locked out of our playground by Marine reserves? How will that affect the towns and people along the coast?

Sorry. I don't mean to repeat here but this really caused me to think. The monies I spent in the last 2 years are the funds I can identify out of pocket that were directly boat related. I didn't think to include any of the costs associated with the house in Netarts. If I include that then I'm easily $1000+ per month.

Also, I did not include any estimates of crew "costs". There are plenty of times that we pull in to top off the tank and everyone else's cash or credit cards come out. They also regularly pay for bait, food, and drinks. (beer can get expensive while we're cleaning & BBQ'g fish)

Then there is their gas costs from Portland or Seattle to Netarts.

Finally, since I've got a smaller boat, I tend to hang within 10 -12 miles. If they MR the reefs off Oceanside, I either get a bigger boat or I move. Depending on the year I may have to move and that may mean off of the coast.

With what Pilar and Mypursuit our saying in this and what a lot of other has shown in what they spent. Sure looks like the state of Oregon is just keeping up with what they have been doing in the last 10 year. And that is pushing money away from there state just like what they have done with large corporations like GP head quarters gone Just makes me sick to look at the money they are taking away from our state well easy come easy go

970$ monthly All year: payment, insurance, moorage.

Bait, tackle, snacks, and fuel for boat and rig are averaged out over 12 months. We start fishin mid May and quite mid November.

I grew up in Tillamook County my family and freinds are still there so I dont have the cost of Motels or dry storage.

Ive seen firsthand the effects that the out of town folks have on the little communities.

When Aufdey can make more money selling the privilage of fishin on his ground than farmin. Why bother with farmin but if theres no fishin?

We have allbut made our minds up on going else where. I hate to give up on home but they dont give you much choice.

We found else where by the way. Chinook, Coho, Chum, Halibut in 80', Lingcod, Tuna, prawns, crab, Oysters, steamers you name it. If anyone is interested let me know.

Apparently, you guys didn't get the memo.

The money you spend on gas for the boat and the gas for the truck that pulls it DOES NOT COUNT. There is no point in adding it up since it DOES NOT COUNT anyway.

Just wondering if I'm missing something? what might this have to do with a persons 07 taxes-
I'm fairly certain the only thing my CPA takes into account is the mortgage interest we pay on our 2nd home in Depoe-
heaven knows we pay alot---
Maybe I don't know how to list the other expenses...................??

Oops. I thought I could write it off as an office since I get caught out there enough times by clients...

Seriously, I don't know about the others but being self employed I go through my business and personal check registers each year for legitimate expenses etc. Since I had them out I just went back through them for everything I could ID as fishing related...

Hey Jon when I was at one of the meetings in astoria with you several years ago the figure of 500 mil economic impact for saltwater fishing in oregon was given when I brought the subject up. This was their number and they admitted it was probably low.

Since I'm on a Sales Call, it's ALMOST all deductible anyway...right Stickfish? I hesitate to even add the costs up per month, my costs in the past 4 months along have been staggering and I can count the fish caught on 1 finger in that time.

Bowling clothes are forever
never leave pins to find other BIGGER pins
How am I going to fit this life raft and survival suit and EPIRB in this bowling bag?
and my favorite:
I bet my 4X4 Dodge Cummins can haul more bowling crap to the lanes than your 2X Hemi
Can I get to the Bowling ranch in a beater VW with no heat, radio and if I have never bowled before?
Does anybody have coordinates to the bowling ranch?
Any open seats for a bowl ho?

I failed to add..............friends and family visiting how much do they spend? they probably wouldn't show go to the coast if there isn't a fishing attraction. If marine reserves and other closuresfrom power making attempts and ODFW we will sell property and move 2nd residence to a more fishing friendly area. Question last time I heard they couldn't find the power machine that sunk off the coast. Have they found it yet?????
