Default Ever Heard Of

Mornin, I wanted to ask you folks if you have heard of anyone catchin Tuna up of Vancouver Island, was just up there and stumbled into a gentle named Bob somethin or other. He said he is or was an avid Tuna fisherman in Northern California. I guess he runs or started a big computer site like this one down there.
Wondered if anyone here has heard of him or that site?

Point being that I got to talkin with him for a minute or two before we left and he said that a chinook fisherman brought an albecore into the marina last year, so the next day he switched hes hali rods over went out found 60 @ 5 miles and cooned em.
You think this was a fluke or just no one targeting them?
By the way if I remember right he said this was around early september.

Fishtale maybe? I dont know! I thought I would ask the experts.

THANX FOR YOUR TIME

Could be true....some years the warm water makes it up into SE Alaska and the tuna will make it up there. They were off Vancouver island last year. I had a friend fishing them.

Winter Harbor WCVI, Talk to IdPainter. We have talked to locals (Chris and I) who fish for Albacore. The warm water comes within 20 - 30 miles of the west coast of the north end of Vancouver island most every summer and fish are caught. Seems like August is the time I heard mentioned. We tried a couple of summers ago with our two boats but the trip had some constraints that could not be overcome. Winter harbor is pretty remote and the nearest practical port is Coal Harbor, a seaplane base with a crappy boat ramp with no docks about 20 miles by boat from there. No fuel at Coal harbor and any available fuel at Winter harbor is going to be $$$$. The trip through fiords is worth it for it's own sake. Stunning beauty I have seen very few other places. Winter harbor is a fishing lodge on an island. There is a nice protected harbor and no bar to overcome. You see tourists there and live aboard boats and little else. Some locals make the RT to fish for Salmon in the bay. The fishing is good.

So hurdle #1 is a 40 mile RT from the boat launch to the departure point. There is a road out to there but I won't drag a boat trailer over it.

#2 is fuel and getting 100 gallons to winter harbor.

#3 is support, food, ice, parts and so on at Winter Harbor. There is a lodge there and a store but it looked pretty sparse to me.

And last the weather. You would have to be incredibly lucky to catch a break. There is wind and fog. Especially in August.

Is it possible? I think so if you are a resident and can pick your days. As a trailer sailor you would have to have some incredible luck.

Haha.....

Uh, yea...... Bob Franko is about as famous as our own Jennie. He started the Coastside Fishing Club. Lead them into the political arena. In fact, his political team is on the agenda right now today with the CA DFG marine reserves planning meeting (see other post).

He started a "fish camp" of sorts out of Tahsis BC.

And yes Virginia, tuna migrate up off Vancouver Island quite often as of the last few years. Just look at your Terrafin or Coastwatch; it will tell you what you need to know.
