Default Chukarchaser's intro

I have been politely informed that it is customary to post an intro as part of ifish initiation, so here it is:

I grew up pheasant hunting and archery hunting whitetails in the farm country of southern Wisconsin. My wife and I moved to Oregon 10 years ago and it didn't take me long to figure out that a tree stand wasn't necessarily the best strategy for elk and chukars live in slightly more rugged country than pheasants. Needless to say, I have a passion for chasing both species. In my opinion, the only thing that compares with packing into a wilderness area for days on end in pursuit of wapiti is watching big-running pointing dogs in rimrock country. The animals that enable me to do both are my 4 packgoats (yes... actual goats bred for packing) and my 3 bird dogs (a german shorthair and 2 english pointers). Hoping my goats will get to pack out their first bear in a couple weeks when we head down to SW Oregon.

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

baltz,

Sounds like a blast... count me in. Always looking for another excuse to make it over to the Owyhee country. Hopefully the bird numbers will bounce back quickly.

Santiam,

That is one cool picture. How many do you typically take with you at a time?

Those goats are AWESOME!! Do they behave really well? Just curious if they are nice about letting you strap stuff to them and going everywhere you want.

Klamath,

The goats also carry all gear on our family backpacking trips. I never worry about them around my 5 and 2 year old boys. Very gentle. My wife describes hiking with them as "just like great big mellow dogs that follow you wherever you go". The first time I put the saddle and panniers on each of them, they stood there and looked around, sniffed it for a second and that was that. First time I put deer quarters on them, they didn't blink. I even take them chukar hunting with me on occasion. First time they heard the shotgun, they jumped, ran 2 or 3 steps, then stood and looked around.
