Default Grant McOmie is gone (UPDATED FRIDAY)

Just in and not good.
(SEE POST NO. 328 FOR UPDATE)

Grant McOmie, the region's television outdoor icon for 22 years, has been fired. I wish there were a better way to put it, but the new station management gave him until May 1.

They've told him they don't see enough interest in the outdoors and environmental issues around here.

I'll check on details to follow, but that's about what I know for now.

Grant's held our hands for many years, cheering for the good runs, crying for lost friends and keeping us within grasp of the real world.

His departure means there's just one major media left in this area with an outdoor communicator and it ain't Oregon...Allen Thomas at the Vancouver Columbian.

I won't miss Grant quite as much as many of you because we've been friends, albeit somewhat more passive than I intend for the future.

We all, however, should join in to wish him well.

Congratulations Grant. It was a great run...

Sad news.

Wow, 22 years and let go just like that. Brutal business to be in. I wish him well, always enjoyed his pieces, especially the tribute to Jim Erickson.

I would think a person of his stature and recognizability will be snapped up pretty quickly.

Good luck Grant!

Just saw him last night. That is too bad, you think they could put him on a work plan or something. Grant McOmie allegedly not showing enough interest in the outdoors and environmental issues was not a wantonly neglect act directed at the employer.

Actually, he was showing great interest...they're saying they don't see enough interest in it among viewers...I think anyway...

I agree 100 %. Between Grant and Bill Monroe they were our only hunting and fishing guys. I am done with Katu. They suck and their decision sucks as well. Maybe we can all gag on more of their storm tracker alerts and garbage like that. I mean that was some of the best journalism and reporting I ever saw. As a matter of fact he was awarded an Emmy award for it, was he not? His is a Forest Grove guy and neighbor and I wish him the best. I will say it one more time, Katu sucks. Watch out Rhonda, you could be next. John Barth Sr.

I think you might want to remind his employer about our loss.

How many of us have been in one of his episodes? Mine was in 1987 or 1988. Seems like a while ago. A whole 20 seconds of my posterior clad in yellow rain bibs. One quick shot of my hand holding a smolt.

Gonna write my lette to the manager of KATU.

May not matter, but it can't hurt.

Ain't a done deal till she sings and I have not heard a note from the fat lady.

I don't want Grant gone and I'm gonna tell them that and will also tell them that I will write a few letter to their advertisers refusing to buy their products if they continue to advertise on KATU. And I will. Hit um in their pocketbooks.

Grants pieces were one of the best things on TV.

I know which news I wont be watching anymore.

Bussiness decisions are just that, but I watched it for Grant and to see what he was going to show us. I find it funny that we live in such an outdoor rich environment and yet we lack in the entertainment variety when it comes to the out doors.

I will miss watching Grants segment. Hopefully sometime soon some one will get him onto something else.

I agree with all of the comments on Grant McOmie and will miss his unique and up beat slant on issues that are important to many of us here in the NW. I can remember a few years ago when Grant was "let go" by the same TV station and the outcry was just as loud. As we all know, he was asked to come back . (I think that returning was his first mistake!) Now they've done it again! Shame on you KATU!

The only thing I do not agree with is that "some one (as in a TV Station) will pick him up very soon". It didn't happen the last time and not likely to happen this time.

I sincerely hope Grant has other, more productive "irons in the fire" and that he can somehow dedicate his considerable talent to endeavors which do not include KATU, ever!

Ifishers,

I just sent this letter to KATU. You might want to add your voice to their e-mail inbox.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Say it isn't so.. I just heard that Grant has been "fired" from KATU. I just read on ifish.net that this was the case.... Can you confirm this statement?

There is no other station that has an ongoing outdoor program to my knowledge. This is the main reason I watch KATU. At this time in history, with environmental issues being of such great importance, I feel you are doing your views a great disservice by not continuing his timely news stories. You've had a corner on the market for focusing on relevant outdoor issues. Why would you discontinue such an important and enjoyable program?

If indeed you have terminated Grant from your staff I will permanently delete your channel from my television programming.

I would appreciate a response.

Thank you,

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe you could send this thread to the KATU station manager to show him the constituency who do watch Grant's shows, but have never contacted the station.

I Always remember Grant being on the tube when I was growing up. He was one of the first outdoor segments that I recall being on TV. Bummer he got let go, but I bet he will find another good show. Heard Bill Dance is looking for a boat driver!

BTW - if you haven't got them yet, don't forget that you can order Grant's Getaways I and II from Amazon. Now might be a good time to buy!

I'll certainly miss seeing Grant on KATU. Hopefully he will be picked up by someone who will recognize his value to the market segment he has served.

Here's the contact KATU link. Note you can direct this to station management.

http://www.katu.com/about/contact/index.html

Here is what I sent. Unbelieveable.

I really enjoyed Grant McOmie's pieces on the outdoors. Portland has a wonderful outdoor heritage and it is a genuine loss that he will not be on KATU after May 1.

Hopefully Mr. McOmie will find another local station as an employer. Either way, May 1 will be my last day as a KATU viewer unless you reconsider your decision.

That brings up an excellent point! The top ranked show on The Portland PBS station is......................"Oregon Field Guide"!! No interest in the outdoors? This is Orygun for chrisake! We invented the outdoors! I love Grant even when his segments are'nt geared directly at fishermen & hunters.

Unbelievable! We have enjoyed Grant's work for MANY MANY years. It's hard to believe his QUALITY show has been canceled. We will miss him and all the beautiful places he took us in Oregon. Places that many of us would not have known about if he had not featured them on his first class show. We will send a letter to KATU as well.

I always stop and watch when i know there is a Grant McOmie piece coming up.

On fish and wildlife issues he talked about what was important at the time, he had good visuals, lots of direct and objective comment from biologist or other experts to provide the science, the affected people having their say on camera, and some statement on the future.

I thought he helped establish with sport anglers that wild fish were critical, but that hatchery programs could also be supported and operated effectively. Overall, he is a tremendous ally to hunting and fishing, and also an ally to willdlife conservation.

How pathetic! 'Not enough viewer interest'--I guess that depends on just which viewers they value (and also which side of the environmental fence they choose to ingratiate). Sweet!

When Rhonda went to mornings, the evening weather guy stopped posting the wind forcasts for the ocean too.

Years ago there was Doug Lamear who actually had periodic half-hour shows. Gone! When Rick Metsger was a sports anchor he did some credible bits on local fishing. Gone! Now Grant! Sad, sad, sad.

McOmie will be missed.
We need to let KATU know that outdoorsmen and women still live in the NW. We also need to remind our legislature and other media outdoorsmen count. No offense to Bill, but the Oregonian should devote more than one eight of a page a week to hunting and fishing.
We do not have to be the silent minority. Make a little noise.

my response to KATU:
Grant McOmie gone? I am very disappointed to hear this news. I ALWAYS favored KATU news just for the chance to see one of reports. Please reconsider. His contributions are one of the reasons Oregon is a special place, sharing our great outdoors with his family and friends. Giving people an opportunity from the city to see what's outside the city limits. It may not be cost effective to the station, or pencil out ratings wise, but it matters big time to me, and obviously a lot of friends in the outdoor community. I'm done with KATU.

Ironic that I hear this news the same day I heard someone on the RADIO say "advocates are saying people are paying more attention to the environment these days", don't recall the rest of the statement but it may have had something to do with Earth Day and Climate change. Then there were the news stories about the large stores ending the use of plastic bags to benefit our environment. Where are guys like Tom McCall when you need them, who will be the next? First we loose Tom McAllister, then Ed McQuary, next Bill Monroe, and now Grant McOmbie. Doesn't anyone in Oregon value the outdoors anymore? Some folks don't seem to think so. Where's those statistics...around here somewhere.. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife 2006 National Survey 87.5 million U.S. residents fished, hunted, or watched wildlife in 2006. They spent over $122 billion pursuing their recreational activities, contributing to millions of jobs in industries and businesses that support wildlife-related recreation. Funds generated by licenses and taxes on hunting and fishing equipment pay for many of the conservation efforts in this country and provide many hours of fishing, hunting, and wildlife-associated recreation.
Grant has been a class act and Katu would be foolish to let him go. Fire the new management team.
What station is it that broadcasts in HD for free, OPB?

Not enough interest in the Northwest about the outdoors. This is really stupid. I loved his stuff.

I for one am having a hard time finding the logic in this decision. The outdoors that Grant reports on is a major part of Pacific Northwest life. He's the one that puts the stories in front of the public eye about sea lions, about our fisheries, as well as wonderful pieces that showcase the beauty of our outdoors.

Grant's pieces are traditionally much longer than the normal sound bites that are put on the station, which means that he covers those topics near and dear to us at a level of detail that is needed. How long do you think that coverage of the sea lion problem will get after he's gone? Fifteen seconds? Will it be done by a person who is very familiar with the situation, or will it be done by a face who only crosses the river on the way to work?

KATU has been my news station for about as long as Grant has been there, though I won't say that Grant is the sole reason. I used to watch Dick Bogle, Richard Ross, and Jim Bosley nightly, and have followed them through the changes. However, by KATU management (new management, I might add) choosing to let Grant go I can say that without a doubt it is time for me to explore different local news sources. However, I will not be going quietly. Please join me, those of you who are as disappointed as I am, in writing to KATU management. Send an email HERE and let them know that their strategic plan for KATU is horribly flawed.

Signed and strongly supported,
David Jackson

I'm sorry to say I watched K2 News tonight as they sported and toured their new million dollar studio set--so now you know where the money went!

This really bites the big one!!!!! Grant's shows were awesome and he will be missed!!! KATU obviousely does not care about its viewers or our opinions one way or the other.

The letter I sent:

To Whom It May Concern,

Please let me draw your attention to the discussion forum ifish.net, and the ongoing reaction to your decision to let Grant McOmie go from your station:

http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?p=1973989

Here you will see that your feelings that Grant's outdoor reporting not being part of your strategic plan for KATU is way off the mark. As a 37 year old male who was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, I can tell you that a good portion of my life revolves around the outdoors. In fact, the outdoors around here is one of the best things going for this area and there are millions of folks in the Northwest that agree. With Grant you have something that the other players in the market do not have: an experienced and knowledgeable outdoor reporter who is respected by many and admired by many more. While you might be looking across the dial at KGW et al and trying to better position yourself against them, by letting go one of the biggest reasons why many of us watch your station you have instead shot your own selves in the proverbial foot.

I ask that you reconsider this decision, for the sake of the viewership that you could lose, for the sake of your ratings which will definitely suffer from this error in judgement, and for the sake of your fellow employees whose jobs count on your decisions being beneficial to the station and its ratings.

Signed,
David M. Jackson

This is what I wrote

I spend many a day in the Portland, Hood River and the Dalles, with Grant McOmies departure slated for May 1 I see no reason to watch KATU anymore. He was informative and told it as he saw it. We have had many discussions over Grant's pieces over breakfast and it seems that will all be coming to an end. I feel that it is a terrible loss for the Outdoor community and a bad move on your part. If I have anything to say with it I will see that my Company and our contacts in the Portland area no longer advertise with your station.

I've sent an email to KATU in favor of Grant. Surely we care about the envioroment, the wildlife, the fish here in the PNW. Sending an email to Oregon Field Guide also.

The following was just sent to KATU. Hopefully they will get a clue if enough of us let them know . The power of Ifish. Even my wife called them idiots...

Dear Management,

It is with a sad heart that I write to you due to hearing that you are letting Grant McOmie go at the end of this month. This is an awful, unwise decision and should be reviewed.

I am avid outdoorsman along with a large percentage of my neighbors and friends that will severely miss Grants shows on the outdoors and related environmental issues. I normally "watch" the news listening with one ear while doing other things around the house. Every time Grant comes on I quit whatever I am doing and sit down and watch intently along with the rest of my family. His segments were one of the reasons I tuned into KATU even though my channel 2 does not come in as well as the other stations. Please be warned that I for one will switch to other news stations as soon as he is gone. There are many others in your viewing public that will do the same.

In fact my wife just came into the room while I was writing this and when I told her what I was doing; she came unglued saying "what idiots you are".

I remember Grant doing a segment on one of the Boy Scouts in our troop placing Christmas Trees as fish habitat in the Willamette River in West Linn. I was helping with my boat and all the scouts assisting were so proud to be doing a good deed and excited about being covered on TV. Grant was very nice and did an exceptional job of reporting how the floods had taken away structure and this was helping replace it and would be good for all wildlife in the food chain.

Grant will be missed and there will be a missing segment on your show that can not be replaced. Again I implore you to reevaluate your decision and keep a northwest icon where he belongs...bringing us the Northwest flavor of reporting on the Outdoors that your audience has come to expect.

Sincerely,

Bob Bailey

They just fired the only defining difference between the local stations, will be a lot easier to go to channel 8 from now on.
