Re: Keeping warm
****** heaters are a great idea! Also the polypropylene neck thingy. And a danged good parka with hood. I use the Columbia short parka and waders, but would never even consider ****** heaters for myself.

Re: Keeping warm
Wind-Stopper, polar fleece, Heavy-weight chamois shirts, down vests, wool blend socks, gortex rainsuit, wool gloves, and a good beanie or balaclava!
Many layers to shed, Always toasty, I hate too be cold! It is much easier to take off clothing when you have it than too put it on when you don't.

Re: Keeping warm
About those little heaters Jen talks about....they have them for your boots too, called "toe heaters" or something like that. They adhere to the bottom of your socks where you place them.
For me, the biggest thing that keeps me warmest is something that saved my life once, going high speed in a zodiak into Dutch Harbor, Ak, when it was about 5 degrees and a wind chill of about 50 below  What was this little thing? It was what I call a neck sock. Use to make them myself before they were on the market, but its made out of polarfleece and slips over your head and stays snug around your neck. In the worst weather, you can pull it up over your cheeks and nose.
I also use a "system 2" long johns made by PolarMax...#3 is too hot for me since I get a natural heating with hot flashes.. Plus I wear special socks you can buy at Walmart, Kmart, or Andy and Bax. They are very thin, white, and wick away ALL the moisture from your feet. Your outer socks may be damp but the inside ones will be bone dry!
Last, but not least, a good heater is necessary in the boat or on shore when it gets below 40 degrees for me

Re: Keeping warm
The thing that keeps me warmest in the boat is my my Stearns Life Jacket. I wear it nearly all the time. Very Warm. Waterproof, too.
The Mr. Heater is really nice, too. French Dip Anyone?

Re: Keeping warm
Guaranteed method to stay warm!!!!!!!!!!!!
ROW THE DRIFT BOAT
Nothing keeps you warmer in the winter than pulling the sticks while sitting on the rowers seat. Your buddies up front are complaining about being cold while you are toasty warm from rowing their big butts down the river!!!
Been there -- Done that!

Re: Keeping warm
I have a polar fleece shirt that was designed with 13 small pockets on chest, back, neck and arms. Each pocket holds a heater pack. I put a polar fleece jacket over that and then my Mustang flotation suit and I am good to go. Of course I know to eat a lot so I have an extra layer of fat to keep me warm. You skinny people will freeze to death before I do! EAT MORE FOOD!

Re: Keeping warm
My fishing partner wants to ask but she is too embarased do those ****** heaters come in double D? The neoprene waders, even though they aare ladies, help but just dont fit all the girls!
I agree on the long underwear and wool socks, then polar fleece a sweatshirt and a columbia jacket or raingear depends. I usually stay warmer than most heat packers. My secret I eat my jalapenos, habernaros, hot oil, red chili paste, cholula- tabasco isn't hot enuough, put that on pretty everything I eat and I stay toasty warm. Nothing else required and I dont wear gloves unless it is snowing.Another trick is putting cayene red pepper in socks or gloves if it gets really cold will works for hours even wet.

Keeping warm
How do you do it? In cold weather I like to dress in layers. Outside layer to keep wet and wind away from everything else ... polypro for insulation ... down if it's really cold (but not if it's going to rain). Silk socks under woolies. Good hat with a big brim to keep the glasses dry. Cummon, give up your secrets!

Re: Keeping warm
Thumper has some secrets!
Hey, what did you call those, Thumper?
The things you let me use?

I keep a good supply of those warmers around.
I didn't remember them the day Thumper, Marty and I went, but they are great! Open, shake and instant heat!!!

Re: Keeping warm
GI Joes has those handwarmers you are talking about Jen 2 for a $1 right now. I use them inside my gloves on really cold days hunting and put them in my pockets. Great heat but I try not to get them wet. Don't know how they work wet...They are best if you keep them in a pocket or other enclosed small area rather than out in the air.

Re: Keeping warm
Banana 99 and hot chocolate. It’s very very good. I’ve checked the ingredients and the banana is artificial. But still “ USE AT OWN RISK” also very good with kaluha and cream.

Re: Keeping warm
I have got to giggle about this...
I was so overdressed that I couldn't get close to my skin with these hot pads.
So I just dumped them down my shirt!
I named them ****** heaters!
I did! OK... I am bad, but oh did they keep me warm!
Jen

Re: Keeping warm
Start from within; High carbohydrates, like hot oatmeal and a bit of pure honey, pasta with tomato sauce, go light on the meat. High fats cause more blood to be deverted to digestion then your arms and legs, ect. Resulting in cold feet and hands.
A good wool stocking cap with a couple of pockets sewn in the top for pocket heaters, under a hooded float coat.
Rag wool gloves sprayed on the outside with several good coats of 3M scotch guard.
A pair of old Hodgemans 3mil that the heels leak and you cant fix, cut off the feet below the ankle and streach them over a pait of Sorell (sp) boots with wool liners.
Toasty from inside-out

Re: Keeping warm
I don't suffer from the cold much--'cept for my feet. I solved the problem this-a-way. I bought
me a pair of size 12 insulated boots & then bought a pair of size 10 1/2 inch felt bootliners
for inside 'em. Feet stay nice & toasty!!
The downside to this is that it's kinda tough
driving your vehicle while your wearing them (especially if it's a stick).
The upside to this is that the ladies pay you a lot of attention while you're wearing 'em.
