Smile One bird down....

....but not mine.

I called in this Tom the other day for my brother. He hadn't killed a turkey in a couple years, so I let him drop the hammer.

I found the tracks of this Tom and his 4 hens in some snow earlier that day. We went back up in the afternoon and I finally managed to scare a gobble out of the Tom. After nothing else I switched to a bunch of cutting, loud yelping, and loud purring. Eventually the boss hen got annoyed and began shouting back. I set up the DSD and continued arguing with the hen. After about 10-15 minutes the whole flock came wandering over to see what all the excitement was about. The Tom was strutting the whole way and had trouble keeping up with the hens. But he stumbled into range and Joe hammered him.

The bird was 19-20 lbs, 8.5-9" beard, and 3/4" spurs, probably a 2 yr old.

Heard a lot of birds, but they'd stop gobbling around 7:30-8:00am and never talk again all day.

I had a Tom roosted Monday night. Was setup on him Tuesday morning and he flew down and walked by me at 80 yds or so. After walking by my truck he crossed a canyon and climbed up a ridge to go fight with a pack of jakes!

Thursday morning I was Setup withing spitting distance of a roosted Tom and he was gobbling non-stop. Just before flydown a truck drove around the canyon and turned in the road where I was parked, drove another 200ft beyond my rig and parked in plain view of the gobbling Tom. The Tom flew down, gobbled one time and left the area. An empty truck with a gobbling bird 200 yards away, guess it wasn't obvious enough that somebody was already working that bird???

The first hour or two was decent weather, then the wind would start blowing and increase throughout the day. This morning the wind was howling at daylight and I never heard a single gobble.

I'll wait a week or so for better weather, the hunting will only get better.

Awsome. Sounds like some good hunting even if someone was not respectful of your set-up. Nice pictures too. I'm ready for some good weather.

Good bird! Did you weigh it? I got a chance to get out on thursday evening. After alot of attempts at locating some big boys I finally took a break and caught the sunset from a friends treestand. Little to no real chatter yet, although as soon as I got about a hundred yards from the truck I get a Tom to run in and bust me. I wasn't set up and was just kinda screwing around with the call on the way back to the pickup and all the sudden "GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE". Well, he wasn't more than 15yds off the road and by the time I ducked down he saw me, and I saw him high tailing it outa there. So, for you newbies, don't start calling unless your set up and ready to shoot. I learned the hard way today. Oh well, I know where he will be for a while and hopefully this weather will turn for the better so I can get a better look and maybe a shot.

Has anyone else noticed they are really not talking like they were last year at this time? Maybe I am just in a turkey vacant area, .

I hope to see some good birds on here this year, and maybe I will post one for this year too!!

GOOD LUCK Y'ALL!!

I had an el cheapo scale in my camp trailer, and it read somewhere around 19-20 lbs.

We heard lots of gobbling early in the morning, but they never started back up in late morning like I thought they might. I usually kill most my birds between 10am and 2pm.

Keep after'm, you'll one soon.

Good Luck and have fun!

Ron, thi9s is a great bird. just be patient and your bird will come. That would have made me upset to. this happens all the time over there guys that justbdo not have any etiquette at all you would think that when you were parked on that road those guys would have passed by or went somewhere else. your time is coming great bird.
