Default How do you 'weatherize' a laminate stock?

I just got a Tikka Laminate Stainless, and while it's a sweet looking gun, I notice some of the wood is fairly raw...inside, where it's bedded and or hidden from view, not the parts you can see when the gun is sitting on the shelf at the store.

Does anyone add another layer of protection to their laminate stocks? If so, what?

(by the way, the laminates are just as lightweight as the T3 Lites. I was actually hoping for a little more weight.)

A thin polyurethane just to waterproof the channel and inside of the stock would work. Just make sure you are not making the stock hit the barrel. rp

Bed the action before you add anything. Most likely the glues used to make the lamination have penetrated the wood and despite its unfinished look its probably already water resistant. Add the poly for peace of mind

mix up some clear epoxy and spread it around w/ your finger like you would to just wet it, no build-up. it will seal the grain and shouldn't affect the fit of the action.

Stickfish is spot on.
But if your still concerned, Ryan's suggestion certainly won't hurt anything.
I usually use Birchwood Casey's products for refinishing stocks, their spary on stuff is what I use to seal barrel channels after Free-Float rasping.

Wow. Trippy thing is, the Tikka supposedly is not of a design to easily bed. I bought the bedding kit, and then took the gun apart, and I was like...what the...how the hell....I mean....but....

The Tikka has a "free floating" recoil lug. It is one of the knocks against Tikka. But there are so manny good reviews of the gun, and so few bad ones...so I just did the poly-urethane, put the gun back together and called it good.

By the way, the "raw" wood underneath, was really absorbant, and I'm sure it did benefit from the poly. Glad I did it. Can't wait to shoot it!
