Default Appreciate some help on a kicker.

Would appreciate some input on putting a kicker on a 22 foot Trophy. The Trophy arrives Sunday and I have not sold the Arima yet so am going to start by swaping the electronics. I have an 1991 18 Horse Merc 2 stroke on the Arima that has low hours and that I have total confidence in. It doesn't get a lot of interest as far as selling it so am thinking of putting it on the Trophy. It has a hydraulic assist lift that should fit. The option is to leave it on the Arima and buy a new 4 stroke. Have been thinking T8 or T 9.9 and from what I have read on here that would be enough to push a 22 foot. The Merc is manual start but has no battery charger.

Finances are a consideration at the moment but don't want to be short sighted on the long term either.

Your thoughts please.

Rod - If it was me I would keep the 18 HP. If you ever needed to limp in on your kicker Im sure you would appreciate the extra HP. On top of that, you already own it, have confidence in it, and it probably wouldnt increase the sale price on the Arima much.

I had a Yamaha T9.9, and it worked great. Here's what I'd do differently:

1. If you get a CMC bracket, get hte heavy duty model.
2. If you're buying new, spend the extra few bucks for the power tilt model. It would have been worth it.

The T-8 is by far the best kicker motor made. Some of 9.9 did not have a manual choke they are sometime a little harder to start. The T-8 with elec start and power tilt is the best money you will ever spend.I used one for years on my 26' boat very strong motor very quiet easy starting.IMHO does your new boat have a 4 stroke main motor? If so if you use the old 2 stroke for a kicker you are going to have to pack a seperate tank on your boat for your mixed gas.

Keep/use the motor you've got, and run it untill it pukes, or you can save the $ for a new four-stroke.

I would agree. BUT, when you do upgrade, the T-8 is the cat's meow as Bluefinn said. It pushes my buddy's 24 foot Trophy just fine.

I have a Yamaha High Thrust 8 with electric start, power tilt and remote steering on the back of my 24' for offshore. It has been the best little troller I've owned. Then last summer I purchased a new Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust with electric tilt but with a tiller handle. I use it on my Klamath 15' for river fishing/trolling. They are both great motors. I would highly recommend either.
Get rid of that two stroke and go four stroke-you won't be sorry.

I've got a 24' trophy and a 9.9 yamaha kicker. The motor has plenty of power to push the boat around, but as someone else commented, my 9.9 does not have a manual choke which does make it difficult to cold start sometimes. I've had a t8 w/manual choke which was a better motor in my opinion. Either will work fine on your trophy though.

I have a 25 ft. trophy 2509. I started out with a high thrust long shaft power tilt TR8 but wrecked it unfortunately in the Willamette, lucky I didn't screw up the boat, so I went to a 15 horse Honda. They were both able to push my boat about 6 miles an hour according to the GPS. Neither are able to let me troll at 2.5 mph into the wind in the ocean, so I've found I rarely use the Honda unless it's glassy out and it's not that often. If I had it to do over, I'd have gotten another Yamaha, in my opinion it's a much more robust motor, I absolutley never had a problem with it starting or running, and the Honda, boy that motor honestly has never run well, despite three trips to the shop.

I think you're going to find that with a bigger boat, the wind might catch it more and you can't use the trolling motor as much as you did on your smaller boat, it's wierd on my boat, I can certainly increase the throttle and get the boat to run straight into the wind on the trolling motor, but then it's running too fast to fish, if I slow down, the the TR1 can't keep the nose into the wind. Downwind no problem. Must be something to do with the leverage and prop size, cause my big motors can run slow and into the wind no problem.

Anyway, hope this helps, I would definitely go to a new motor, you can get either one I believe on a 5 yr. low interest loan program so I think you could be into the Yamaha for about 75 a month or so at 6%. With inflation I'm betting the motor is going to be rising in price about 10 percent a year for the next five years so the loan isn't a bad deal looked at like that.

Now if we could get some salmon in the ocean to fish for, it would be great owning an ocean going fishing boat!

I have a T8 4 stroke yamaha that i am taking of my 23' MAXWELD, I have twin Honda 115's on the back. so I never use it, and I am tired of packing it. It has the remote controls and power tilt. It is still on my boat if you want to hear it run.

Thanks to all of you. I still haven't made a decision but am leaning heavily towards the t8. Hope to meet some of you in person at the TA and Swap Meet on the 26th.
