Spring bear just opened in MT, but I'd need a snowmobile to do any hunting . I'm at 3200 ft and it snowed last night, more expected this weekend. I think I'm ready for a little global warming at this point
From what I understand the winter kill off is average. Most wintering grounds were as usual. In Madras we around 2000 ft. Never had crap for snow all year. Above 4000 ft is a different story. I drove through out central and eastern oregon all year chucker hunting. The deer population looks great to me. I would see up words of 200 or 300 deer in a day.
Put Global warming on the back burner this weekend it's going to snow down to 500' in the west. This winter just keeps comming on, my HLS deer wish it would turn to shorts and tee shirt weather. Whew!

I haven't had the chance to get over east... thnx for the info. I have alot of points that should hit this year and I am a little worried about the population.
I have heard from a biologist and have read about it somewhere that the amount snow is not what kills the elk and deer but when we get the long periods of clear, freezing weather that eigther dries or freezes everything up and the animals are left without water, not to mention the temperature is considerably colder when it is clear and we didnt get very much of that this winter at all compared previous winters.
I spoke with the biologist in the John Day office today,he said the elk did very well and just came down to Fox Valley and over to Long Creek.
