Default Longbeach Clamming Report

I went out Thursday, I have no idea why There was an easy 50 mph steady wind and the waves crashed so hard on the beach all day the clams were not showing. I think they were drove down deep. I clammed for about 45 mintes with 2 other diggers and I found 1 clam. My little boy (4) was having a hard time standing. The wind was actually pushing him up the beach, he had a hard time standing in the wind. It was just flat miserable.

Friday was a different story. I started before dark and found a few, but it was work and I never saw a show that I didnt create by pounding the sand with the shovel handle. We lit up some lanterns and kept at it. We all got our limits, and several people who came over and asked how to dig a clam got an education. Just about the time we were done, the clamming got better. We were getting clams every 5 feet or so. One of the guys that came over and asked how to dig clams, turns out lives right next to my uncle.

Friday during the day, the family was doing the touristy stuff and we were visiting one of the lighthouses when some guy walks up and says "arent you BOE off ifish" Turned out to be Fishing Fool and he recognized me in full parka and hat trying to stay warm in the cold wind. He had seen a picture of me on ifish in the past, what a memory. Nice to meet you Tim.

I wish I was there tonight making holes in the sand. :depressed:

Howdy Roy,
Trusty, myself and my two boys (11-12) went out friday night as well. Clams were showing pretty well between the sets, but the ocean was kickin' up pretty hard and making it difficult to stay on 'em. We did manage our limits, but they were smaller than we got last spring. Also, couldn't believe the amount of baby clams we got in each shovel/gunload. Tiny little 1/2 to 1 inchers. Trusty wanted to go last night, but thank God I talked him out of it!! That would have been plum dangerous.

You're glad you skipped it. The wind was blowing at least 40mph and gusting higher. All told 4 clammers found 2-1/2 clams. They just wouldn't show at all. It was fun and I can't wait for the next tides. The old garage sale lantern is good to 40mph+ wind but it won't float or burn underwater. I knew it was a good deal when I paid 5 bucks for it.

Those razor clams were pretty safe last night. They didn't show well and when they did, the rain pelting the surface of the sand quickly erased any dimples. The blow was quite fierce! If you dropped anything, it would be blown to Moclips! Three of us braved the gale for a grand total of 11 clams. Next time we'll do better, I hope!

Man you guys should have been with us (Myself, Dad and bud Fred) at Ocean Shores Thursday night. Arrived at the beach at 4:00 and was leaving with 3 limits by 5:10. Ya it was windy, but no rain. You'd go for one and three others would show around it!!! Great diggin' and hardly any people!!! Next set of dig days is scheduled for Dec30th, 31st, and Jan 1st. Looks like maybe New Years eve will be spent on the coast!!!
Good luck and tight lines,Jeff

Me and two buddies went to Long Beach on Saturday. It was my first time clamming up there. The weather was wild! The wind howled and the rain poured. We started clamming about 5pm. Dimples were hard to spot but we managed to get our 3 limits in about an hour.

I'm glad that I had been reading about this on ifish. I have never clammed in the dark before. We took a lantern and several flashlights. The lantern is the only way to go!

Another night time trick that we learned was the flashing strobe light in some of the vehicles parked on the beach. Boy does that help when you are trying to find your way back to your rig in the dark.

I checked the history file in ifish for tips on cooking clams. I tried the Progresso bread crumbs with garlic and spice with the asiago cheese mixed in.  Wow!!!!! Was that great!

Washington really has their act together when it comes to clam management. Oregon should take a lesson. We will definately go back to Long Beach again.

Did anybody go to the seaside/gearhart area and clam this set of low tides? curious how anybody did.

Rubberrobbin - the strobe light works good if you got one, I just stuck my GPS in my coat pocket, I saved where the beach access road was (kinda hard to find in the dark) and where I left the truck.
